Shelter Movers is a national, volunteer-powered charitable organization providing moving and storage services at no cost to individuals and families fleeing abuse. We collaborate with local businesses and community agencies to support people, primarily women and children, as they transition to a life free of violence. Every year, in collaboration with community partners, our volunteer teams contribute over 65,000 hours to support people transitioning to lives free of violence and abuse.

About this Role
Shelter Movers is seeking a Volunteer Services Manager to lead a team of volunteers to develop and execute the Volunteer Services Strategy. Reporting directly to the local Chapter Director, this pivotal role involves supporting the execution of the strategic plan among volunteer functions, refining policies and procedures, and overseeing project management initiatives.
The Volunteer Services Manager Role is the best fit for a leader with a strong background in team management, particularly within the nonprofit sector. What you’ll be responsible for:
  • Supporting the Chapter Director and National Volunteer Services Director in executing Shelter Movers’ strategic plan, as it relates to Volunteer Services
  • Select, train and manage a large team of volunteers 
  • Grounding recommendations and decisions in evidence, using key performance indicators to understand volunteer behaviour
  • Leading recruitment and engagement events in person
  • Providing reports and analysis where necessary to demonstrate the effectiveness of current policies and procedures
  • Actively contributing to national Volunteer Services team meetings and with ideas and feedback on national initiatives and procedural changes
  • Managing ongoing and temporary projects (e.g., student placement programs) as needed
  • Execute volunteer onboarding, including but not limited to; volunteer screening, facilitating orientations and general administrative tasks
  • Assisting other chapter-level functions when necessary, including but not limited to supporting event planning, take the lead on a monthly newsletter creation, operational support, and participation in moves

Role Details
  • Job Type: 28 hours per week (with possibility of increased hours)
  • Salary: $27-$30 per hour
  • Location: Edmonton, Alberta (Work from home, but local travel necessary)
  • Hours of work: The nature of our services requires a time commitment that may vary weekly to support move planning and execution. While we strive to provide some scheduling predictability, the successful candidate must be willing to embrace flexibility within their working hours.
