Purpose of the Position

The Vice President, Water Resources will lead Matrix Solutions Water Resources service line and drive business growth, profitability, and operational objectives. The successful candidate will be a dynamic individual, with a proven track record of success in their career, and a technical aptitude. The Vice President, Water Resources will be responsible for overseeing the design and implementation of the service line strategy that aligns with Matrix’s strategy and growth objectives. He/she will play a pivotal role in shaping Matrix’s market presence, identifying new opportunities, and ensuring the successful execution of commercial initiatives within Water Resources.

The Vice President, Water Resources will report directly to the Senior Vice President, Consulting Engineering, Canada. He/she will directly lead a team of Technical Directors, Service Directors, and an Operations Director within the service line (collectively, the service line leadership team)

Key Responsibilities

Strategy

  • As a member of the Matrix senior leadership team, contribute to the development of Matrix’s strategy, and annual goals and tactics to support successful execution of strategy.
  • Develop a service line strategy in collaboration with their service line leadership team that is aligned with Matrix’s overall strategy.
  • Collaborate with other Matrix and Montrose leaders to identify opportunities for cross-service line and cross-border collaboration and growth opportunities.
  • Operations
  • Establish and maintain a strong safety culture for all employees that is consistent with the company’s values:

  • Maintain accountability for profit and loss performance across the water resources service line.
  • Support and mentor the members of the service line leadership team and empower them to make sound business decisions.
  • Make significant project-related decisions (as dictated by the delegation of authority).
  • Prioritize technical and resourcing priorities within the service line that will have the greatest impact on Matrix’s success.

Growth

  • Collaborate with the other service line Vice President’s to prioritize projects and technical initiatives that have the greatest impact on Matrix’s performance.
  • Work closely with Service Directors within their service line and with business development leaders across Matrix to maintain a robust business development pipeline that is consistent with the company’s growth and profitability expectations.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships with relevant customers at Matrix’s large and strategic clients and other emerging clients within the service line.
  • Monitor customer satisfaction on projects executed within their service and prioritize activities that will improve client experience.
  • Prioritize client and project pursuits and required resources within their service line to align with the overall service line strategy.

The Candidate

Experience and Professional Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree, and 15-20 years in the consulting industry, with demonstrated experience in an operational leadership capacity. Experience providing water resources services to both the private and public sectors would be of benefit.
  • A high-level understanding of the following disciplines/services: physical hydrogeology; source water protection; water supply; Environmental Assessments; stormwater management; watercourse restoration/stabilization; sub watershed/watershed plans; flood mapping and mitigation; surface/groundwater interactions; numeric modelling (hydrogeologic/hydrologic/hydraulic). The successful candidate would be considered expert-level in 2-3 areas of focus.
  • The successful candidate should have a strong reputation and network within the Canadian water resource community.
  • A broad understanding of the Canadian water resources market, including competitive and regulatory aspects, with the ability to identify opportunities and threats to Matrix’s Water Resources service offering.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and enact strategies to achieve desired business outcomes. Experience related to developing and executing business strategies that cross geographical-, market-, and discipline-boundaries would be of benefit.
  • Demonstrated experience enacting risk management principles, balancing legal, fiscal, health and safety, technical, client and reputational risks in terms of project delivery.
  • Previous exposure to other Matrix service lines (e.g. ES&P, ARRM, Digital Services) to facilitate working with senior Matrix leaders in developing an overall business strategy across Canada.
  • An effective communicator with highly effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Very strong and well-developed people leadership and people development skills, with an ability to inspire and motivate team members.
  • Driven to deliver results, with demonstrated skills at delivering performance. Holds himself and his/her teams accountable for results.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and within North America on a quarterly basis.

Education

  • An undergraduate degree in Water Resources/Environmental Engineering, Geoscience, or other relevant degree. A relevant graduate degree would be an asset, which would include business-focused graduate degrees.
  • A Professional Engineer, or Professional Geoscientist designation is preferred, with a Water Resources focus/background and an ability to gain professional accreditation in both Alberta and Ontario.
