Traditional Program Support Worker

Summary:
Under general direction of the Health and Wellness Manager the Traditional Program Support will work to support the Firekeeper/Harvester and Traditional Programs.The individual will collaborate/assist with sweat lodge building, maintenance and ceremonial duties, traditional medicine harvesting and preparation, managing wood supply and storage, and other duties as requested.

Job Duties:
1.Assist in activities to support the Traditional team
-Assist in preparation of the sweat lodge
-Gather Grandfather stones for sweat
-Prepare and tend fire for the sweat
-Clean and maintain area surrounding lodge
-Harvest and prepare medicines for storage
-Assist with firewood splitting and storage at main and satellite office
-Assist with organizing the Saanjigaan (Medicine Shed)
-Manage sacred fire at Noojmowin Teg Health Centre, when regular firekeeper is away

2.Administrative Duties
-Participate in mandatory training, as defined by organization
-Submission of timesheet for processing

Requirements:
Mandatory
-Current CPR C and First Aid Certification
-Valid Class G driver’s license
-Access to a vehicle or reliable transportation
-Clear Vulnerable Sector Check
-Safety training for equipment use, may include chainsaw course

Preferred
-Experience working in First Nation communities
-Knowledge of communities of Manitoulin Island
-Understanding and sensitivity for the Anishinaabe culture

Skills
-Problem solving skills

Abilities
-Strong ability to plan, organize and schedule
-Ability to work independently and connect with others
-Ability to work with minimal supervision
-Ability to speak Anishnaabemowin, is an asset

Work Conditions:
-Main work will be outside in various weather conditions
-Lifting and moving various materials up to 50 pounds, is required
-Use of proper safety gear- boots, gloves
-Frequent sitting, standing, chopping
-Frequent exposure to smoke
-Possible evening or weekend work required
