Job Description

Our client, a Canadian-based company and leader in the design and manufacturing industry, is adding aSystems Designerto their team. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Engineering and Technical Design, you will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and evaluate the feasibility of concepts for retail displays by considering practicality, aesthetics, budget, production methods, and brand characteristics. You will create development solutions that are innovative, on-brand, functional, sustainable, cost-effective, and manufacturable.

Who you are

You are an experienced Systems Designer or Electrical Engineer who enjoys taking ownership of projects, guiding the work of others, and thriving in an independent, self-guided role. You have experience with wiring schematics, power calculations, and electrical codes specifically related to lighting systems, visual display screens and power receptacle outlets. A collaborator and a leader, you have the ability to change direction quickly, adapt projects and work to troubleshoot and solve problems on the spot.

You are excited to work on large-scale projects, including retail displays for luxury brands such as Armani, Gucci, and Tom Ford. You will play a critical part in bringing products to life and helping increase sales by augmenting merchandise through lighting, special effects, motorized turnstiles, and digital displays.

You will:

Design.You will review customer specifications to create drawings and bills of materials for assigned projects within budget, including the selection of parts. You will also design load calculations, single-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams for power distribution for lighting, display and touch screens, and sensors, including network diagrams for communication and automation where applicable.

Collaborate. You will work closely with the Engineering Manager to assist with a range of design projects and support continuous improvement initiatives. You will provide engineering support to design engineering and R&D. You will coordinate with sales leads, customers, and installers regarding specification and design questions and clarifications.

You have:

The education and experience.You have a degree in Electrical Engineering, and you are eligible for a Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) license. You have extensive experience working with electrical lighting power systems and standard electrical testing and measuring equipment with an excellent understanding of Electrical Safety Procedures, NEC and IEEE Codes as well as CSA and UL. You can create and adhere to project budgets and contain costs.

The technical skills.You have an understanding of the engineering requirements for store furniture and retail fixtures and displays. You have advanced experience with AutoCAD and some exposure to SolidWorks as well as coding in common applications with languages, such as but not limited to, Visual Basic, Python, C++, and Java. You can interpret design briefs, procedures, and instructions that are in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The solution-oriented approach.You have the ability to manage competing deadlines, set and adapt timelines, solve practical problems and deal with complex variables in situations under pressure.

The interpersonal skills.You have professional communication skills, including the ability to articulate and defend your ideas and design choices, create instructions, and write reports and correspondence. You are a strong collaborator who can build trusting relationships across all levels of stakeholders.

What you can expect from the interview process:

A virtual interview with a Talent Advisor discussing your interest in the role, the team’s culture and how you will make an impact as our new Development Designer.

An in-person interview with the Senior Manager, Engineering and Technical Design to answer questions about the scale of your experience and provide you with an opportunity to share your insights and expertise in the field of development design.

A final in-person interview with the hiring manager and a senior member of the team to discuss a range of design and client scenarios and how you would respond to them. It is a chance to ask questions about the team and the company.
