Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Director Payroll, Technology Solutions and Analytics, the Supervisor of Payroll:

  • Prepares student/casual/part-time/full-time payroll for a population of over 2000.
  • Effectively manages a team of payroll administrators, enhance processes and ensure accuracy and timeliness of payroll operations.
  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers, maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Responsible for coordinating and providing front-line customer service and support to a wide variety of university departments and employees.
  • Responsible for handling and analyzing sensitive and confidential information on a regular basis, including providing information, reports and advice for labour management issues.
  • Works collaboratively with other People & Culture employees to ensure the timely, accurate and effective delivery of Human Resources/Payroll Services.
  • Responsible for all aspects of the administration of the CUPE 3912 Collective Agreement as well as interpreting and administrating other collective agreements.
  • Works closely with the Payroll & HRIS Data Reporting Analyst to ensure successful completion of system and process changes.

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Supervisor of Payroll you will have:

  • Undergraduate degree with a business concentration and a minimum of three (3) years' directly related payroll processing experience in a large complex payroll environment. Or;
  • Community college courses equivalent to 2-year post-high school education with minimum five (5) years' directly related payroll processing experience in a large complex payroll environment.
  • Completion of Intermediate Payroll Level 2, Canadian Payroll Management Certificate Program.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both oral and written.
  • Successful record of teamwork in a high-volume work environment with the ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Excellent computer/keyboarding skills using an integrated computerized payroll system, Word, Excel, File Transfer (FTP) software and Crystal Reports, speed and accuracy is important.
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail is critical in this role.
  • Ability to handle and maintain strict confidentiality and understand the conditions under which information can be released.
