As part of VCH’s Transformation team, which supports executives, senior leaders and the Board to establish and cascade strategic and operational plans for the organization, you will be part of a dynamic team responsible for developing and maintaining the planning and execution processes for VCH; strengthening the overall health of the organization; and planning, delivering, monitoring, and reporting on the full continuum of health services, which includes population and public health programs, high quality community-based health care and support services, acute hospital care, as well as improved productivity and performance.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Director, Innovation the Strategic Advisor will be responsible for the development and execution of engagement and education initiatives to support the development of a vibrant innovation culture at VCH.  Working closely with other members of the Innovation team, and the Transformation Team more broadly, the Strategic Advisor will work to support the delivery of the new Research and Innovation for Impact strategic priority. An excellent communicator, facilitator and connector, the Strategic Advisor will conceive, create and implement new strategies and initiatives for staff and medical staff engagement, education and recognition to power our innovation strategy. Working in partnership with internal teams the Strategic Advisor will increase awareness, understanding, and expertise for innovation, innovative ways of thinking, and existing and future VCH supports for innovation, empowering staff and medical to bring new ideas to life, and increasing the capacity and expertise for innovation within VCH. 

Responsibilities include the research, development and delivery of material to inform and educate staff and medical staff about innovation, innovation skills and innovation opportunities related to the Strategic Plan; the identification, engagement and facilitation of internal partners to share best practices, knowledge, know-how and skills related to innovation, or the co-development of innovative solutions; and the management of and design and execution of initiatives to recognize and celebrate innovation and innovators across VCH. The Strategic Advisor may also represent VCH in its working relationships with internal groups and entities including VCH Hospital Foundations and the VCH Research Institute and external parties including Health Authorities, the Ministry of Health, other levels of Government, education, and research, and support activities consistent with the strategic priorities of VCH.

As a Strategic Advisor, Innovation with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Effectively gather and research information, trends, events and emerging best practices to inform the development and delivery of innovation education materials and initiatives.

  • Establish strong relationships and ongoing dialogue with partners across corporate and operations teams, to support the effective and optimal coordination of innovation education and resources across VCH.

  • Plan and deliver events and initiatives to recognize and celebrate the innovation efforts and impacts of staff and medical staff.

  • Create strategic and polished communications and presentations, using a variety of media, and in collaboration with VCH Communications Leads, to engage and inform staff and medical staff, and external partners about innovation at VCH.

  • Work with and across teams and projects, to design and execute approaches to promote the operational impact of innovation projects, interventions and change initiatives within VCH and to external partners.

  • Implement strategies and lead projects and tactical interventions (e.g. hackathons, crowdsourcing) to support the VCH innovation strategic priority and to empower staff and medical staff to contribute to the Innovation Strategic Priority.

  • Build and maintain a network of colleagues in VCH enabling or conducting innovation to create and deliver opportunities for continued innovation engagement and learning (e.g. a Community of Practice for Innovation).

  • Facilitate meetings and workshops with key internal teams and individuals to build awareness, understanding, knowledge and know-how related to innovation and innovation initiatives. 

  • Engage with internal and external partners, including healthcare providers, government agencies, and academic and community organizations, to gather input, inform priorities and build consensus on health systems innovation initiatives.

  • Provide subject matter expertise and consultation in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives from the identification of initiatives through to project planning, implementation, integration, evaluation and ongoing monitoring to ensure successful project completion and sustainment.

  • Utilize project management processes to plan, track and report on strategic initiatives, and other project-specific planning as required.

  • Develop and implement key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of education and engagement goals.

  • Foster an environment that encourages diverse opinions, recognize differences and incorporate them into processes and services.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare, Communication, Science or relevant field.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) year's recent, related experience in education, engagement, project management and facilitating and managing consultation processes with a wide range of partner groups.
  • Excellent communication skills to function within a complex interdisciplinary environment including ability to communicate with the physician community.
  • Computer literacy with word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, collaboration, project management and database applications.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Broad understanding of innovation, especially in healthcare, and the importance of an enabling culture.

  • Initiative, vision, independent thinking and creative problem-solving abilities to implement strategic initiatives.

  • Demonstrated understanding of communication methodology to ensure that partner engagement and communications are understood at all levels within a complex internal and external network.

  • Effective facilitation, persuasion and negotiation abilities to achieve consensus, resolve conflict and achieve desired outcomes.

  • Ability to work in a dynamic and challenging environment as a part of a small and high-functioning team.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to function within a complex interdisciplinary environment.

  • Effective time management under pressure to meet deadlines, balance work priorities and resolve problems in a timely manner.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of project management principles, methodologies, and ability to coach team members on these skills.

  • Change management, and influencing decision-making at the individual, group, and organizational level.

  • Knowledge and experience with virtual engagement tools and visualization tools is an asset.

  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
