Job Description

The Sr Director, Capability & Operations reports to the Executive Director, Portfolio & Enabling Functions (P&EF) and acts as chief of staff and business planning lead for the Clinical Data and Insights function (CDI) within BioPharmaceuticals Clinical Operations (BPCO). This role is a senior leader on the P&EF leadership team is accountable for management and leadership of a team of business planning and operations professionals providing a broad set of services for the BPCO function. They will work with peers in similar roles to establish and evolve standardized ways of working both in BPCO and across R&D. In addition, they will also manage the yearly business planning process for CDI and execute on operational processes in support of the CDI leadership team. This includes yearly goal setting, budget management, risk management, capacity planning, and workforce planning.The Role: Team leadership Manage a team of business planning and operations professionals that provide cross-functional support across BioPharmaceuticals Clinical Operations. Provide strong leadership to foster an environment of high performance and continuous improvement. Identify and nurture talent within the team, providing opportunities for growth and professional development. Champion and implement process improvements to streamline operations and reduce inefficiencies. Ensure the adoption of industry best practices and standards within the teams operations. CDI Business planning: Partner with CDI functional leadership to devise multi-year strategic plans and align yearly functional scorecards and objectives with broader corporate strategies and ambitions. Spearhead the development of annual functional capacity and budget proposals. Formulate strategic workforce enhancement and capability development initiatives. CDI Business Operations: Assist functional leaders in the continuous management of budgets, including regular reporting and analysis. Provide ongoing oversight of critical services provided to CDI such as contractor recruitment, staff onboarding, and training. Oversee the functional risk reporting and mitigation strategies. Monitor and communicate progress on scorecards and objectives. Keep the capacity and demand plans up-to-date in line with evolving business requirements. Curate and maintain a portfolio view of business improvement initiatives to enhance function performance. CDI Chief of Staff support: Act as a key member of the CDI leadership team. Organize and guide leadership team meetings, ensuring actionable outcomes. Drive effective communication and employee engagement through various channels, including townhalls, meetings, and written communications. Manage and interpret function performance metrics to support informed decision-making. BPO community participation: Contribute a functional perspective to the BPO peer community to shape strategy and decision-making across BioPharmaceuticals Clinical Operations (BPCO). Collaborate with the Executive Director, Portfolio & Enabling Functions (ED, P&EF), in formulating strategic plans and objectives for BPCO. Engage in the development and implementation of best practices and standardized procedures alongside BPO colleagues. Assume ownership of certain cross-BPCO operational processes, if required. Lead or contribute to cross-functional business improvement projects to drive innovation and efficiency.Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in science, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field is required. Strategic Vision: Proven expertise in developing strategic plans with the ability to operationalize these plans into actionable steps. Team Management: a minimum of 10 yearsDesired Experience: Advanced degree Project management and/or process improvement certification Experience working across multiple nationalities and culture Familiarity with financial management and budgeting processes Knowledge of risk management principles and capacity planning Proficiency in data analysis and performance metrics When we put unexpected teams in the same room, we unleash bold thinking with the power to inspire life-changing medicines.
