Specialist Technology, Analytics and Research (STAR) Analyst

We are looking for a Structures Analyst with a keen interest in numerical modelling to join our team. This position will be with the Specialist Technology, Analytics and Research (STAR) team in Toronto, ON, a center of excellence for technical innovation in the built environment. We employ groundbreaking technologies and methods to advance Arup into new markets which usher in a safer, healthier, sustainable, and resilient future. We are a multi-disciplinary team with deep technical expertise in the built environment and a passion for increasing the resilience of communities. We can simulate almost anything in the built environment, applying the best of numerical modelling (FEM, CFD), risk modeling, and digital innovation to predict the impacts of natural hazards. Our team has expertise in structural dynamics, stress analysis, wind engineering, and fluid mechanics.

Responsibilities of this specific role will include, but will not be limited to, the following:

  • Undertake numerical analyses using first-principles methods to solve our clients’ most difficult challenges.
  • Perform and report linear and non-linear, static and dynamic structural finite element analysis, principally for structural and geo-engineering applications (e.g.earthquake, wind, and vibration analysis).
  • Conduct studies to understand the risk posed by natural hazards and the physical threat of climate change.
  • Collaborate with other structural engineers, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and risk consultants on innovative buildings and infrastructure projects.
  • Work on defined tasks under the supervision of a senior engineer.

We encourage candidates who have interest/proficiency in any of the following:

  • Structural analysis and finite element method analysis
  • Dynamics and seismic design, including performance-based design philosophies
  • Materials science and materials engineering
  • Risk and resilience assessment and resilient based design

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a 4-year bachelor’s degree in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Fundamental knowledge of structural mechanics, dynamics, and/or risk modeling, as appropriate.
  • Basic understanding of computer programming and/or coding experience.
  • Interest in the built environment and the design of sustainable infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Cover letter included in application submission.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA or higher.
  • MS or PhD in engineering is desirable but not required.
  • Proficiency in non-linear finite element method analysis.
  • Experience or familiarity with the built environment, i.e. buildings, transportation infrastructure, and other civil infrastructure.
