We are currently looking for a Shopfloor Quality Engineer based out of St. Thomas, ON

Volkswagen Group’s largest cell factory in St. Thomas will carry out all battery activities – from processing raw materials to developing a unified Volkswagen battery to managing the European and North American gigafactories. We are looking for a Shopfloor Quality Engineer who will be responsible for fulfilling the quality management system requirements, monitoring and achieving the quality targets of the production unit while working on internal / external quality problems with cross functional teams. Temporarily reporting to our Senior Finance Director & Head of PMO Company Ramp up, this role will eventually report to our Plant Quality Lead and is comprised of all quality relevant activities such as production process approvals, requalification for production, process quality analyses.

This is a temporary flex hybrid model requiring 2 days in the St. Thomas office, subject to change based on the needs of the project, will eventually transition to fully onsite

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Ensuring that the company quality management system requirements are met.
  • Ensuring the fulfillment of customer specific requirements and automotive quality standards requirements regarding product quality.
  • Ensuring that quality targets and performance metrics are reported and published, and all other responsible persons within the production unit are informed.
  • Implementation of process quality analyses and reporting (First time quality, scrap, rework, internal/external sorting)
  • Leading improvement of quality activities and processes by analyzing the process quality data, (time and consumable cost of inspection, scraps rate etc.)
  • Supporting risk assessment of nonconforming products and coordinating blocking and releasing actions.
  • Leading implementation of quality statistical process control (SPC) tools within production unit.
  • Coordinating cross-functional teams for problem solving in operations for internal and external (customer complaints/returns) quality problems
  • Coordinating the production unit in defining and implementing corrective & preventive actions
  • Coordinating quality workshops for operations quality tasks
  • Planning and monitoring of periodic inspections at product and process (Product audits, process audits, 5S audits etc.)
  • Supporting all quality-relevant activities for operations such as control plan, requalification for production, production process approvals, PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) / VDA - PPF documents for customers
  • Supporting Quality-Ramp up in Gigafactories
  • Supporting the necessary preparations within the production unit for customer and internal/external quality audits and the definition and implementation of actions.
  • Supporting continuous improvement activities for quality and following up the action plans created to achieve the targets.
  • Participating in PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) studies and reviews and supporting implementation of changes.

Qualifications: 

  • University degree with a focus on Industrial Engineering (preferred), or Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering
  • 5+ years of relevant experience within the automotive, battery (preferred), chemical or pharmaceutical industries
  • Familiarity with IATF 16949, VDA, Customer Specific Requirements and Automotive Quality Core Tools (PPAP, MSA, APQP, SPC, FMEA)
  • Working knowledge of problem-solving tools such as 8D Problem Solving Methodology, 5 Why Analysis, Fishbone Analysis, Failure Tree Analysis etc.
  • Certificate in internal auditing is preferred.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% domestically and internationally (Spain, Germany, China)
