About the Role:
Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure Services, this role has primary responsibility to ensure the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the in-house 24x7 IT Infrastructure hardware and services that support core organizational functions.


The Technical Specialist’s role is to design, install, administer, operate, and optimize company servers and related components to achieve high performance of the various business applications supported by tuning the servers as necessary. This includes ensuring the availability of client/server applications, configuring all new implementations, and developing processes and procedures for ongoing management of the server environment. Where applicable, the Technical Specialist will assist in overseeing the security, integrity, and safety of the Azure Cloud and managed data center/server farm.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Design, install, configure, manage, and monitor core infrastructure services running on Windows Operating System, both in Azure and on-premise VMware hypervisor.
  • Perform system configuration and management; define and perform server backups and recovery procedures
  • Manage enterprise directory services and supporting server infrastructure; including accounts, permissions, access rights, and storage allocations in accordance with best-practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance
  • Plan and implement server upgrades, Windows Operating systems, upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied patches
  • Monitor and test system performance and provide performance statistics and reports.
  • Recommend and execute modifications to server environment in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance
  • Support and maintain data center/server room processes and procedures
  • Anticipate, mitigate, identify, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware and software problems on servers. Escalate incidents as necessary
  • Develop and maintain training materials and server documentation, including system configuration, procedure, and processes
  • Coordinate and collaborate with network engineering, business application, and database administration function to ensure availability, reliability, and scalability of corporate servers to meet business demands
  • Establish, implement, and comply with policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure server security
  • Comply with predefined policies and licensing agreements
  • Act as project lead in the design and review of new server systems, applications, and hardware; conduct capacity planning as needed
  • Conduct research on server hardware, software, protocols, standards, and best-practices in support of procurement and development efforts
  • Practise asset management, including maintenance of server component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information
  • Support application development teams throughout project lifecycles
  • Provide guidance to junior members of the team


Your Requirements:

  • University degree or college diploma in the field of computer science and/or 10+ years of equivalent IT experience
  • 5+ years experience in a senior technical specialist position responsible for managing server, storage and backup environments
  • 5+ years experience with software and hardware troubleshooting
  • 5+ years experience with server patching. SCCM patching experience an asset
  • Extensive experience with Azure Cloud Computing, Entra ID, Active Directory and Single-Sign-On configuration
  • Strong knowledge of PowerShell scripting with a focus on automation of tasks
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Windows Server, VMware, and File (DFS, NFS, and CIFS) services
  • Strong experience with backups and recovery procedures. Experience with Rubrik backup an asset
  • Experience with server management, monitoring, and performance tuning tools. Hands-on experience with SCCM, SCOM an asset
  • Strong knowledge of storage technologies such as SAN or NAS
  • Experience with the following hardware: Cisco UCS (blades) and Dell/EMC Unity SAN, Rubrik Backup appliance
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining all manners of server hardware and associated network equipment
  • Good understanding of: TCP/IP, Ethernet, DNS, DHCP, WINS, MS IIS, and FTP/SFTP
  • Experience with other enterprise applications like SQL, Exchange, SharePoint, Citrix an asset
  • Datacenter/Server Room cabling (Copper and/or Fibre) knowledge an asset
  • Experience within the financial services industry an asset
  • Some travel required to our datacenters in the Greater Toronto Area
  • Microsoft Azure Cloud certification, VMware certification an asset
