Reporting to the Structural Section Manager, the Senior Structural Engineer is the member of the integrated project team that contributes structural engineering knowledge and analysis. to the project during the design phase of our work. The project mix is varied across building and non-building structures in collaboration with other business groups within HDR including Architectural, Water, Resources, and Transportation Business Groups. The role involves working on multiple projects with project sites in various locations. The Senior Structural Engineer may be involved in construction contract administration, site inspections on different projects, condition assessments, peer reviews, and quality reviews. The successful candidate will be playing a vital role in supporting a growing collaborative and integrated engineering team by providing mentorship, promoting leadership skills, and consolidating design and construction documentation processes. Common areas for progression and career growth for this position include narrower Technical Specialization and Project Management.

Primary Responsibilities

In the role of Senior Structural Engineer, we'll count on you to:

  • Serve as a technical expert with recognized authority in structural engineering as it relates to projects; resolve problems of greater scope and complexity.
  • Plan and develop projects or design activities. 
  • Actively participate in development of project deliverables. Plan, organize and supervise, and seal work of medium to large teams of professionals and technicians.
  • Support a wide variety of projects that require Owner’s Engineering, consulting, and detailed design.
  • Participate in development of procurement and construction specifications, design reviews and technical assessment of construction progress.
  • Perform complex assignments exercising judgment in evaluation, selection and modification of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Serve as Project Manager on larger projects, though project management is not sole focus of position.
  • Produce and coordinate several projects concurrently.
  • Establish client relations (internal and external clients) and be involved with marketing, contractual, design and production meetings.
  • Coordinate staffing and workload of staff through entire project development to complete documents on schedule.
  • Conduct schematic, design development and contract document work sessions at project sites in conjunction with other Project Managers, appropriate technical professionals and other disciplines.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Scope of work includes the following structural engineering practice elements of building engineering:

  • Concrete, Steel, and Masonry structures
  •  In addition to building structures, the scope might be also extended to different civil and line structures as well. Including transportation, water, and waste management projects
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • A minimum of 10 years structural engineering experience as it relates to building design.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) license.
  • Proficiency with finite element structural design software such as SAP2000, ETABS, SAFE, or similar analytical software, and working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, BIM 360, Bluebeam.
  • Expert in local building codes in Canada and the US (e.g. ASCE7, NBCC).
  • Experience in design calculations and layouts.
  • Ability to design and detail in steel, concrete, and masonry.
  • Requires understanding of gravity analysis and lateral analysis.
  • Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must.
  • Strong communication, listening and mentoring skills, and ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Good leadership and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering is preferred.
  • Experience in coding, programming, and design automation a plus.
  • Experience with ACI 350 structures and in particular related to water retaining structures a plus.
  • Experience with structural condition assessment, repair, and rehabilitation.
  • Computer knowledge Risa 3D, RAM, STAAD PRO is deemed a plus.

Other Job Details

Further, the position requires:

  • Compliance with HDR and, as applicable, contractor safety policies and procedures.
  • Potential attendance at job sites to support design and construction activities.
