The Senior Strategist, Interpretive Planning provides a strategic and comprehensive approach to interpretive planning to amplify our mission, provide a thoughtful approach for visitor touchpoints on and off park, reinforce our brand through innovative storytelling, atmosphere and construction design.

What you will do:
  • Project manage all Interpretive Design Programs for capital projects, on-park and seasonal experiences, including budget, vendor procurement and management, interpretive design, content/design briefing, stakeholder consultation, and design execution.
  • Develop interpretive content including signage, art activations, digital experiences, activations and theming.
  • Write creative copy for Interpretive needs and provide creative and copywriting briefs and edits to internal and external contractors.
  • Activate the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo conservation story on site through physical design infrastructure in thoughtful and impactful ways to deeply infuse the WI/CZ mission into the visitor journey.
  • Streamline wayfinding and information communication to improve visitor flow and better share operational, promotional and interpretive content
  • Advise on design and construction of new experiences and habitats to inform aesthetic, visitor flow and circulation, interpretive story and theming, landscaping ecology and design and overall experience.
  • Craft a strategic approach and advocate for diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion in our visitor journey and interpretive design process that aligns with the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo Leadership DEI strategy.
What you will bring:
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or natural history interpretation
  • Master’s degree in museum studies or science communication
  • Certified Interpretive Planner
  • 7+ years of experience as a curator
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills that are demonstrable.
  • One must present portfolio examples of signage and other interpretive content
  • Ability to present information to audiences of all ages and education levels in an engaging manner.
Working Conditions:
  • Considerable on grounds mobility and long periods of time on feet
  • Office based position that may require long periods of computer work
  • Minor lifting tasks
  • Ability to work on weekends, statutory holidays and evenings may be required
The Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
