The Taylor Institute For Teaching & Learningis currently seeking a Full-time Regular Senior Manager, Communications & Programming.

The Senior Manager, Programming and Communications reports to the Associate Director, Strategic Operations with accountability to the Senior Director, Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning, the Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning), and the Office of Experiential Learning. This position leads a team that is responsible for developing and implementing the overall communications and marketing strategy for the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning, including including brand management, audience recruitment, advertising and marketing, media relations, website content, social media, special events, and internal communications for the diverse teaching and learning audience, locally, nationally and internationally. The Taylor Institute is committed to supporting the implementation of the University of Calgary’s Indigenous Strategy, ii' taa'poh'to'p and to build relationships with people from Treaty 7 & and Metis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 & 6).

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Marketing, Communications and Programming

  • Develops, implements, and measures high-quality and timely marketing and communication strategies.
  • Proactively seeks out opportunities and achieves success in reputation management, brand strategies, marketing, media relations, social media, campaigns, publications, events, and internal communications designed to create a positive image for the TI and the University of Calgary.
  • Provides long- and short-term communications advice to senior leaders and colleagues within the TI and across campus on teaching and learning related issues and topics.
  • Ensures the implementation of strong and consistent brand and positioning protocols for the marketing efforts of the TI.
  • Improves and broadens the reputation of the TI locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Ensures alignment of marketing and communications efforts across the TI to ensure resources are focused on Teaching and Learning priorities.
  • Supports internal communications, in conjunction with the Strategic Operations team in the TI, to foster a high-performance culture.
  • Leads the development of communications plans for major donor announcements of +$1 million, working with colleagues in Advancement.
  • Manages contracts and relationships with external contractors, freelancers, and design providers.
  • Provides leadership and management for program planning, execution, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Works professionally and collaboratively with other university communicators and marketing professionals, as well as members of the Office of Advancement and external funding agencies.
  • Leads a team of communications and programming professionals, ensuring the appropriate allocation of personnel to projects, providing staff with direction on administrative policies, procedure, collective agreements, technical requirements, priorities, and service expectations.
  • Coaches and mentors staff; supports team members to develop professional development plans.
  • Responsible for the development of timely and compelling Teaching and Learning stories to showcase teaching, education and research accomplishments.
  • Works with TI staff to create and maintain an engaging website for the TI and Vice Provost Teaching and Learning (VPTL).
  • Manages hiring, performance management, and discipline, up to and including discharge for AUPE staff, co-op students, and contractors (specialists, photographers, videographers, writers, designers).
  • Leads team members to deliver successful events that meet objectives, by engaging internal and external stakeholders.
  • Establishes, tracks, and maintains social media channels and content to share the news and accomplishments of the TI.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with peers in the post-secondary and teaching and learning spaces in Canada and internationally.

Strategic Planning / Projects

  • In conjunction with the VPTL, Senior Director and senior leadership, develops, monitors, and meets the TI's objectives in the area of marketing and communications.
  • Provides advice to the VPTL, senior director, and unit leadership to effectively allocate and utilize resources to achieve strategic goals and objectives with regards to marketing and communications.
  • Responsible for overseeing the communications and marketing budget for the TI.
  • Works with the Office of Advancement to provide a TI / VPTL perspective on any university-wide announcements, events and initiatives.

Communication and Relationships

  • Fosters a work environment that encourages, recognizes, and rewards continuous improvement to promote a culture of high performance and innovation.
  • Serves as a coach/mentor in the training and development of the Programming and Communications Team.
  • Fosters the development of collegial, high trust working relationships with each other and colleagues internal and external to the TI.
  • Manages complex issues and challenging interpersonal interactions with composure and diplomacy.
  • Seeks expert opinions and advice where appropriate and considered reliable.
  • Proactively develops and maintains trustworthy, productive, and problem-solving working relationships with colleagues and staff across the university community and external agencies.
  • Coaches and motivates staff and project members to develop positive, high-trust working relationships; manages conflicts towards win-win outcomes.
  • Creates an environment where knowledge sharing, training tools, coaching, and staff development ensure service levels are met or exceeded.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A post-secondary degree in marketing, communications, public relations, business, or a related field.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in the marketing and communications field, including at least 5 at the management level or equivalent including experience in program management.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing strategic marketing and communications plans, including large-scale projects, campaigns, and initiatives targeted to diverse, large audiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required, including editing and proofreading with strong attention to detail.
  • Proven success identifying and telling compelling stories, adapting them for a wide range of media and public relations purposes in varied media.
  • Strong technical fluency in design software, web content management platforms; ability to quickly learn to navigate new platforms.
  • Experience in leading event planning and promotion, including but not limited to: event design and logistics, lead development, email marketing, video production, speaking notes, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct a high-volume of work, within a diverse portfolio of initiatives having multiple and competing deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to build and maintain relationships with a broad range of individuals, from university administrators to faculty, staff, students, and members of the general public.
  • Strong understanding of social media and how to leverage social media to the advantage of the TI.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion principles and practices
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous perspectives, communities, protocols, and engagement
  • Familiar with the University' Indigenous Strategy and engagement
  • Experience supporting community dialogue and campus engagement with Indigenous communities and community members would be an asset.

This position is classified in the Management Career Band, Level 2of the Management and Professional Staff Career Framework.The salary range is from $86,824 - $138,918 and salary will be determined based on the incumbants level and scope of knowledge and experience related to this role.
