Salary: Our salaries generally range from $ 123553.59 to $ 154441.98 and are based on qualifications and experience.

About the rôle 

We’re constantly evolving to build an inclusive housing system through research, design, innovation and partnerships. Join the Legal Services team, where you will provide expert-level legal advice to business partners on CMHC’s operational and strategic matters, policies and programs and act as lead counsel for complex and major transactions. You will establish and maintain positive on-going relationships with business partners, senior management and coordinate work with other legal team members. In doing so, you will help us make housing affordable for everyone in Canada. 

What you’ll do: 

  • Play a leading role in providing legal support for CMHC’s programs and activities. 
  • Act as subject matter expert in the legal fields related to the position.
  • Advise on risk and strategic issues and manage these elements with stakeholders to achieve business objectives. 
  • Advise and contribute substantially to the development of internal corporate, business and governance policies. 
  • Lead the day-to-day delivery of legal support to an assigned area(s) or entire program(s). 
  • Mentor, coach and support the work of intermediate and junior legal colleagues.
  • Instruct and manage outside counsel on matters assigned. 
  • Assist in the overall delivery of Legal Services Division’s mandate. 

What you should have : 

  • A membership of a Bar in any province or territory (common law or civil law) or the Chambre des notaires du Québec. 
  • A minimum of 7 years’ demonstrated post-call legal experience, in private or public sector firms or organizations, in one or more of the following areas: financing (real estate, general, secured/unsecured lending, etc.), transactional, mergers-and-acquisitions, banking, general corporate/commercial. 
  • A demonstrated ability to act as lead counsel for major transactions. 
  • Expert-level legal research and drafting skills. 
  • A demonstrated advanced level expertise in fostering partnerships and teamwork. 
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Strong problem solving, flexibility and innovation skills. 
  • A demonstrated experience in managing multiple files under very tight deadlines. 

It would be great if you also had : 

  • A knowledge of Crown corporations and government machinery. 
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is highly desirable.
