POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Director of Nursing Services oversees the nursing department and ensures resident needs are met by coordinating resident care, managing clinical systems and providing supervision to clinical team members. The Senior Director of Nursing Services is responsible for managing the clinical resources effectively and efficiently to attain and maintain the highest level of care to residents in accordance with nursing and regulatory standards. In addition to performing the duties of a Director of Nursing Services (DNS), the Senior Director of Nursing Services will provide oversight to additional assigned center(s), train and mentor assigned DNS and support company-wide initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directs the nursing department by setting department goals and objectives and leading the clinical team to achieve set goals and objectives.
- Proactively manages care and services for each resident including coordinating admissions, overseeing care planning, facilitating nursing practices and procedures, and maximizing resident’s quality of life and quality of care with the integration of resident rights.
- Ensures that the residents’ dignity and right to privacy are upheld, and residents are free from sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, corporal punishment, exploitation, neglect and involuntary seclusion. Reports allegations of abuse or neglect to the appropriate state authority and administrator. Investigates reported abuse and neglect allegations according to policy and procedures.
- Ensures that there is adequate staff in number and ability to maintain the highest practicable level of physical and psychosocial wellbeing for each resident and meet the state and federal regulations.
- Provides supervision and training to clinical team members including assuring annual reviews are completed, competencies are evaluated, and training is provided as needed. Observes, mentors, and trains new and current team members to center’s programs, policies and procedures and holds staff accountable for duties assigned.
- Develops and evaluates, in partnership with the clinical care team and administrator, the resident care goals and policies in order to assure that adequate resources and services are provided to residents. Reviews reports and medical records on an ongoing basis to ensure highest practicable care is being delivered.
- Oversees the documentation and communication of resident care and services. Confirms resident records are completed in a timely manner and maintained according to company policies and state regulations. Maintains confidentiality and protects resident information according to the state or federal regulations.
- Manages clinical systems and programs including but not limited to Managing Acute Condition Changes (MACC), Nutrition at Risk (NAR), Psychotropic Drug review and Skin at Risk/wound care management.
- Assists in the management of the Infection Control Program and Antibiotic Stewardship including acting as an Infection Preventionists (as required) and completing specialized training in infection control. Provides training to staff on infection control practices, investigates and reports incidents of infection and tracks infection data.
- Implements quality improvement programs designed to help deliver the highest possible level of service. Partners in the investigation and root cause analysis of incidents. Collaborates with the management team on the development and implementation of appropriate interventions.
- Responsible for keeping the department on budget and ensuring conformance with standards of quality care. Informs the administrator on budget concerns.
- Updates the administrator on resident changes, staffing changes, and significant care plan changes and collaborates with other departments and professionals to ensure quality resident care.
- Participates in leadership team by actively contributing in decision making, grievance follow up, building and company-wide initiatives and attending leadership team meetings such as daily stand up, Managing Acute Care Conditions (MACC), Nutrition at Risk (NAR), Utilization Review (UR), Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) and other meetings as required.
- Participates in the manager on duty and clinical on-call rotation as assigned; including weekend oncall duties and covering clinical shifts as necessary to ensure resident care needs are met.
- Attends and participates in continuing education programs keeping CEUs credits up to date and attends and participates in training, in-services, and staff meetings.
- Provides clinical support to assigned center(s) by reviewing performance, developing a plan to achieve performance goals and providing oversight through routine communication and site visits. Assists assigned center(s) with survey preparation, plan of corrections, audits and collaborating on work plans.
- Assists with the onboarding and development of assigned DNS through coaching, mentorship and training. Provides on-call support to assigned DNS by answering questions and providing guidance.
- Collaborates with the clinical and operational leadership team to identify company goals and objectives and to carry out these goals and objectives in assigned center(s) through planning, implementation and follow through to achieve comprehensive results.
- Reports on assigned centers and DNS to leadership team, assists in problem-solving challenging situations and championing company-wide programs and initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The Senior Director of Nursing Services must have a current, unencumbered Registered Nurse license in the state of practice. Minimum of 4 years working in geriatric nursing, including experience with medication administration, delivery systems and pharmacies. Two years in supervisory/management position, including experience with budgets, staff development, training and scheduling preferred. Additional course work in management is an asset. Ability to creatively problem solve in both resident care and employee management situations. Must be a team player, well organized, and flexible. Working knowledge of MDS process, state and federal survey, and CMS is preferred.
EDUCATION
The Senior Director of Nursing Services must have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing.
