Venor is proud to partner with our client, Grieg Seafood, in their search for a Seawater Production Director.

Grieg Seafood is a global leader in salmon aquaculture. The company operates farms in Norway’s Rogaland and Finnmark regions, as well as British Columbia and Newfoundland in Canada. Position Overview

Reporting to the Regional Director, the Seawater Production Director is a key member of the Executive Management team of Grieg Seafood NL. This role has prime responsibility for all aspects of the seawater production, the key objectives being to ensure the production of a superior quality product produced in a manner that meets or exceeds the expectations of our customers in terms of quality, size and farming practices. The incumbent will be required to ensure that all farming processes comply with all relevant regulations and external / internal standards adopted by the business.

The Director will oversee and participate in development of biological plans and communicate and oversee the Seawater Team’s implementation of these plans. The incumbent will develop the seawater production budget based on biological plans and will participate and lead the seawater team’s input to the biological planning process.

Creating a positive constructive culture is a core requirement for all leaders at Grieg Seafood. Leading in a constructive style that encourages input from all levels of the organization is essential. Participation in the development of core values and strategies to ensure that these are broadly adopted is required as is the active utilization of tools developed by Grieg Seafood to foster a high performing team.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Production Management:

  • The Director will be responsible for all aspects of seawater production ensuring that all government regulations and policies that relate to the production of salmon in Newfoundland are adhered to and that the appropriate procedures, protocols and requirements are met or exceeded;
  • The Director working with the veterinarian, is responsible for the health and wellness of the fish stocks located at seawater farms and their biological performance. The Director will work collaboratively with Fish Health and the Planning to ensure that systems are in place to rapidly identify issues with fish health, performance and quality and, through their team, will be responsible for developing solutions to problems that are identified. The overall objective is to reduce risk, improve survival, convert feed to biomass and deliver a low cost of production in a safe manner;
  • The Director will be responsible for the development and improvement of efficiencies of seawater production and effectively decrease COP as well as meet production and quality targets on all levels. Specific quality and size targets will be developed in conjunction with the Managing Director;
  • The Director will be responsible for identifying opportunities to undertake RFP’s or other appropriate process to identify preferred suppliers for critical services and supplies (for example, freight services, packing, diving services, net washing services) and for running competitive bidding processes that result in improved services and lower costs;
  • The Director will be responsible for the timely presentation and development of reports as required and as they relate to seawater production;
  • The Director is responsible for the Health and Safety of the team.

Talent Management:

  • Ensure adherence to company Human Resources practices and procedures and fostering of positive ongoing relationships with all employees;
  • Train, develop, mentor and coach team members;
  • Ensure that Grieg Seafood’s “ways of working” are modeled and adopted throughout their team;
  • The incumbent will work within NL’s core values to deliver a positive ‘constructive’ workplace environment;
  • The Director will be responsible for the fostering of ongoing positive lines of communication with the direct reports and their support staff on a continual ongoing basis;

The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline with ten (10) years of Marine and/or Aquaculture experience and a minimum of five (5) years related managerial experience. A combination of education and experience will be considered.

The incumbent will possess strong leadership skills; excellent Project Management skills; good verbal and written communication skills; and the ability to problem solve.The ideal candidate will also have well-developed interpersonal skills including experience in team building and goal-setting, and demonstrate competency and strong skills in all software applications used by Grieg Seafood. A valid driver’s license is required.

The Seawater Production is ideally based in Marystown and works 40 hours on average per week Monday to Friday. However, Grieg Seafood is open to a flexible and/or hybrid work schedule within Newfoundland. An expectation is that they will be spending time on sites as well and they will be on call in case of an emergency.
