School Mental Health Ontario (SMH-ON) works together with Ontario school districts to support student mental health. As a provincial implementation support team, SMH-ON provides leadership, resources, implementation coaching and a community of practice in order to promote the uptake, scaling, and sustainability of evidence-informed, implementation-sensitive, identity-affirming and culturally responsive practices in school mental health. SMH-ON serves the 60 English and 12 French school boards in Ontario, remote school authorities, and provincial and demonstration schools. The team works alongside the Ministry of Education and has a role within the wider system of care, linking with partner ministries and organizations to advance child and youth mental health.

We are currently offering a (paid) summer 2024 research internship (with possibility of extension). In this role, the School Mental Health Research, Evaluation & Monitoring Intern would provide research support regarding the monitoring of evidence-informed, identity-affirming school mental health practices at the provincial and board level. The successful candidate will be equity-minded and will have a background and understanding of mental health and education, research methods, as well as implementation science and its application to school settings.

This role includes, but is not limited to:

  • Review mental health and addictions action plans and related documentation.
  • Generate and populate Excel and Word reporting tools.
  • Prepare university research ethics applications and responses.
  • Conduct literature searches and prepare evidence reviews.
  • Support collation of information in databases.
  • Support the development of a consultation process for SMH-ON strategic planning.
  • Prepare research reports and presentations.
  • Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in education, psychology or related mental health field.
  • Experience with completing research reports and/or projects.
  • Experience with qualitative analytic methods.
  • Experience with analyses of qualitative data (e.g., from interviews or focus groups).
  • Strong attention to detail, planning, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English.
  • Proficient in computer applications such as Outlook 365, MS Office Suite, Zoom.
  • Experience in the Ontario publicly funded education sector is an asset.
  • Understanding of the Ontario education sector is an asset.
  • Bilingualism in English and French, or other languages, is an asset.
