Research Commercialization Principal (Neuroinformatics) - ROSS

Reporting to the Director, Industry Partnerships and Technology Transfer of CAMH’s Research Services Department, the Research Commercialization Principal will provide support to the Director in identification, protection, development and commercialization of intellectual property (IP) related to CAMH-born technologies in areas such as bioinformatics (neuroinformatics), big data, digita lhealth, artificial intelligence and machine learning; as well as other areas of neuroscience as may be required.

The successful candidate will, in consultation with the Director, conduct interviews with researchers and assess inventive research at CAMH for novelty and commercial viability. The Principal will determine the IP protection strategy, coordinate with patent agents as required to ensure optimal protection and prosecution of the IP rights. The Principal will establish and maintain a network of potential industry partners, increase industry awareness of CAMH-developed technologies and research expertise. MRC will work with the Director to develop a successful marketing and commercialization strategy for CAMH technologies and draft, review and negotiate complex option and licensing agreements, as well as inter-institutional agreements. In close collaboration with CAMH researchers, the Principal will prepare applications for early stage technologies and assist with procurement of proof-of-principle funds. To promote entrepreneurial culture at CAMH and to ensure successful commercialization of CAMH-developed new technologies, the Principal will participate in the development of training programs aimed at sensitizing scientists to issues of IP protection and commercialization. The Principal will participate in the development and implementation of various strategic initiatives to keep abreast of new developments in the field of technology transfer. The Principal will keep IP records and agreements files up to date and will monitor correctness of electronic records related to IP protection and commercialization.

Required qualifications include: a university degree, a graduate degree is preferred in life sciences in addition to a university degree in informatics, computer sciences or similar field (or equivalent experience in these fields). You will possess three (3) to five (5) years of technology transfer and business development experience in a research, hospital, academic or corporate environments. You will possess strong written and verbal communications and interpersonal skills.

Additional qualifications will be considered an asset including: formal training/education in business administration and intellectual property law; familiarity with the addictions and/or mental health field; experience drafting and negotiating various types of agreements including license and option agreements; familiarity with principles and practice of intellectual property management and commercialization, knowledge of patent law and patent prosecution process; demonstrated ability to deal with a wide range of people including scientists, administrators, industry representatives, senior management, and attorneys; excellent computer skills including word processing, database and spreadsheet software; ability to write successful grant applications; extreme accuracy and attention to detail; ability to motivate others and utilize tact and diplomacy; strong initiative and self-motivation and a constant drive for improvement; and ability to work effectively in an environment with sensitive and confidential information. Bilingualism (French/English) is considered an asset.
