Research and Data Management – Senior Scientist
The Chiefs of Ontario is inviting applications for the position of Senior Scientist, Research and Data Management Sector. In consultation with the Director of Research and Data Management, the Senior Scientist will lead in the development of a First Nations data support as well as surveillance system, address questions from First Nations leadership, communities in Ontario and inform other sectors within the Chiefs of Ontario on data issues and protection. The Senior Scientist will also be a senior member of Research and Data Management (RDM) team.
Location: Hybrid – Remote and Chiefs of Ontario Secretariat Office, 468 Queen St East, Toronto Ontario
Policy Duties and Responsibilities:
- Surveillance: Establish regional processes for ongoing monitoring of health and wellness (including development and implementation of meaningful metrics related to health and wellness), develop processes to support community-level surveillance
- Build research infrastructure: Write policies, develop processes and protocols, monitor and improve the quality of research program (including defining and reporting on metrics of a successful research program)
- Data stewardship: Ensure management of existing and new sources of First Nations data by COO and its partners aligns with OCAP principles
- Establish and extend research collaborations and networks: Serve as team member and/or co-investigator in studies led by others, and build COO’s reputation as a competent and reliable partner, and where delegated represent COO in external networks and projects
- Generate research projects based on First Nations research priorities; inquiries from COO and/or community leadership
- Provide technical research expertise as required: Write successful proposals for funding, design effective studies, analyze data, facilitate interpretation of data analyses, prepare reports and publications, and collaborate on knowledge translation activities.
- Recruitment and mentoring: Identify and recommend staff positions necessary for a successful research program, lead and mentor multidisciplinary research program teams
- Travel will be required
- Doctoral (PhD) degree in epidemiology, public health, biological science or medicine, in analytical science or medicine including postdoctoral work; with 5 to 10 years’ experience
- Understanding of and desire to advance First Nations data sovereignty
- Commitment to listening to and learning from First Nations knowledge and principles in order to expand the impact of First Nations knowledge on research and data management practices.
- Broad technical expertise in surveillance, epidemiology, research and data management
- At least 5 years of experience leading projects and performing research
- Expertise in data analysis (quantitative and qualitative expertise preferred)
- Track record of publications and/or grant funding
- Significant scientific network
- Experienced at leading and managing the research efforts of others
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to self-direct as well as to work collaboratively
- Driven towards constant improvement and lifelong learning
- Ability to translate research into useful policy and recommendations
Successful candidate must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and eligible to work in Canada.
DURATION: January 2024 to March 31, 2025, with the possibly of renewal based on available funding.
