Job Description
Are you a Registered Practical Nurse looking to take your surgical skills to the next level? Mount Sinai Hospital's Operating Room (OR) is the place for you! Our recently redeveloped facility provides a unique opportunity to develop specialized technical skills related to surgical procedures, instrumentation, and equipment.
Not only will you have a direct impact on patient outcomes, but you'll also have the chance to broaden your experience beyond the traditional scrub nurse role. By joining our team you will learn to second-circulate and rotate through various surgical services.
Successful candidates to this educational opportunity will be required to successfully complete RPN perioperative nursing certificate course and exam. This course involves a combination of in person and web based classroom as well as clinical training. The program will run for a total of 11 weeks (6 weeks theory and 5 weeks clinical). At the successful completion of the program all RPNs selected will be awarded a regular full-time positions in the OR. Candidates will be selected on the basis of the requirements indicated below, panel interview, and, if all else is equal, seniority.
The Hospital reserves the right to cancel this opportunity should the minimum number of participants not be reached. Candidates who successfully complete this program are expected to remain an employee in the OR for at least one year following the date of which they commence their position.
An employee who voluntarily leaves employment prior to the completion of one year of continuous service or does not successfully complete the RPN perioperative nursing certificate course and exam is required to reimburse Mount Sinai Hospital fifty percent (50%) of the total amount on course/exam monies received.

More than 16,000 patients undergo surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital every year. We are experts in and globally recognized for our specialized Cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Orthopedic Surgery programs. Specialties utilizing the Main Operating Room/Cysto are General Surgery, Urology, Gynaecology, Otolaryngology, Lasers, Ophthalmology, Oral Surgery and Orthopaedics - both Reconstructive and Sarcoma. The Main Operating Room has 3 state-of-the-art Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) suites. This team has sponsorship opportunities available for nurses interested in obtaining OR certification.
