Job Description
Duties:
As a member of an interdisciplinary team, you will work actively and collaboratively in gathering of relevant health information, organizing and delivering mental health & physical care to geriatric clients in an Ambulatory Care and ECT psychiatric setting.
Provide all nursing care to ECT clients; including setting up equipment/supplies for ECT & intravenous ketamine infusion procedure and demonstrates knowledge of emergency equipment, use of oxygen & suction machine plus use of pulse oximeter and cardiac monitor
Ability to liaise with the prescribing teams and ECT team.
Ability to organize, coordinate and facilitate treatment sessions.
Ability to facilitate flow of clients from and to ECT suite and any other tasks needed.
Assist in updating of protocols, policies and documentation in line with current national ECT standards and guidelines
Maximize the person’s function, participation and control in their recovery.
Have a keen awareness of the needs of clients, families, and service providers in the community, who will participate jointly in the planning and delivery of person-centered care.
Demonstrated ability to focus on continuity of care through clear communication.
Provide nursing support to Outpatient; Outreach and ECT services.
Provide nursing support to engage patients in, plan and facilitate 1 to 1 or group sessions.
Provide care to scope in emergency psychiatric/medical rapidly changing situations, with a proven ability to prioritize care to match clients’ needs and resources.
Demonstrated ability to provide nursing assessment, recognize and intervene around emergent health problems.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply Mental Health Act and all other legislation related to the practice of mental health nursing.
Safe preparation and administration of medication as per the Royal policy and procedure.
Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of the Royal.
Ensure a work environment that is conducive to The Royal’s Harassment-Free Workplace policy
Other assigned duties as required.
Qualifications:
Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario is required.
BSc N. is preferred.
Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and/or Gerontology is preferred.
Minimum of two years’ recent experience in Geriatric Nursing and Psychiatry preferred.
Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
Ability to manage and provide specialist training in ECT for qualified nursing staff.
GPA (Gentle Persuasive Approach) training and P.I.E.C.E.S training, or other related dementia care training is preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of the standards of Canadian Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing practice.
Knowledge of changes associated with the aging process and areas of vulnerability.
Knowledge of psychopharmacology, medication reconciliation and problems which complicate drug therapy with seniors.
Excellent organizational and coordinating skills to maintain efficient and safe patient treatment, recovery and transfer to and from units
Excellent documentation skills with strong attention to detail
WHMIS update in preceding 12 months.
Fire Training update in the past 12 months.
CPR Certification within the last 12 months.
Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training (C.P.I.) required.
Basic computer skills required.
Must complete workload measurement and RAI-MH training upon hire.
English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression.French level A- is mandatory in oral expression and oral comprehension.
