Department: Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority
The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) offers challenging and exciting careers in health and social services delivery and administration in Canada’s North. The Territorial Authority has service locations in communities across the territory and a staff of more than 1,600 serving over 43,000 residents of the NWT and 5,900 residents of the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. Challenging work, welcoming communities, and expanded opportunities are some of the benefits offered to employees of the NTHSSA.
Located within the Inuvik Regional Hospital (IRH), the Acute Care ward provides 24 hour care for obstetrics (including Labor and Delivery and newborn care), pediatrics, medical, surgical, psychiatric, and palliative care patients. There is also a 3 bed special care unit to look after patients requiring more intensive care, and a 4 stretcher day surgery unit. The Acute Care Registered Nurse (RN) reports directly to the Manager of Nursing Units. The Acute Care RN provides culturally sensitive care to patients on the Acute Care unit or in the 3 bed special unit. There is a staff mix of RNs and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) on duty. After hours, 1 RN will be designated as charge nurse. Each RN on Acute Care may be required to act as the responsibility nurse after hours.
The Acute Care Registered Nurse is a member of the nursing team which assesses patient status and responds to health problems, plans and performs independent interventions to facilitate the maintaining or regaining of clients' health. The RN acts as a patient advocate and facilitates communication between the patient, family, and other health care professionals which results in holistic care delivery. It is expected that sound judgment is used in carrying out patient care and in the implementation of physician's orders.
Based on patient census and activity throughout the IRH, the incumbent may be required to provide nursing care in Long Term Care and assistance in the Emergency Department or may be required to be on call for the ward.
This level of knowledge is commonly acquired through the successful completion of a Nursing degree and two years recent experience in an acute care setting.
