Our Opportunity

Fortescue, North America is seeking a driven and resilient Regional Director for Canadian Government Relations to drive and deliver on our North American development strategy. The Regional Director, Canadian Government Relations will be charged with leading Fortescue’s external efforts with federal, provincial, and local governments and other critical stakeholder groups in Canada.

The candidate will report directly to the Vice President of Government Affairs based in

Washington DC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of federal, provincial, and local government policies and perspectives on energy sector activity, especially hydrogen in the targeted region
  • Build and maintain ongoing relationships with provincial lawmakers and government representatives from departments relative to Fortescue’s business
  • Engage with other critical stakeholder groups including First Nations, non-profit organizations, environmental organizations, academic or research institutions and community groups
  • Develop and implement programs to ensure that relations with all appropriate actors are pro-actively managed to address the company’s needs
  • Identify, monitor and manage high level government risks for Fortescue
  • Collaborate with relevant counterparts in other organizations that are developing green hydrogen production, infrastructure, or utilization projects
  • Manage consultants and/or external firms associated with relevant projects and programs
  • This role may also be responsible for crisis management and problem solving.
  • The individual will coordinate and collaborate with the FFI North America team, and FFI Global External Affairs (including Brand/Marketing Communications and our Communities/Social Performance teams) to ensure effective support of FFI’s development strategy.
  • The individual will be expected to manage interactions with relevant stakeholders directly and through specialized third-party consultants.
  • You will be required to regularly travel within the region to (a) develop and maintain critical relationships, (b) work closely with local teams to solve government and community-related problems, and (c) develop and maintain government strategies in FFI work areas.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience

  • Over 10 years of experience working in the political and/or business environment in the targeted region at a strategic level
  • Advanced degrees in law, business, energy, or environment are preferred
  • An excellent understanding of the renewable energy markets and an in-depth knowledge of energy policy issues in the targeted region
  • A broad and deep network of contacts within the targeted regions including with individuals, governments, and organizations that impact the energy sector in those regions the capacity to develop trusted relationships across cultural settings and to become a trusted partner of government and local leaders
  • Strong interpersonal skills with comfort in dealing with ambiguity and changing priorities
  • A strong alignment to Fortescue’s values, including Fortescue’s commitment to eradicate Modern Slavery
