Publishing Strategy Manager

Locations: New York or Shanghai - Internal applicants from any Springer Nature Journals hub location are welcome

The Nature Journals Publishing Strategy team are responsible for the development of the Nature titles strategy to meet both commercial and editorial goals alongside managing the transition of the titles to an open access business model.

The Publishing Strategy Manager is responsible for assisting in the development of the Nature Journals publishing strategy to grow impactful research (primary) content. You will contribute to the day-to-day strategic management of the Nature Journals and act as a trusted interface between various departments.

Core responsibilities:

Manage the Nature Portfolio business:

  • Support the Head of Publishing Strategy, Research, with non-financial KPI budgeting.
  • Monitor KPIs, track the performance of the portfolio in coordination with the Editorial Directors, and analyze performance as required.

Strategy development:

  • Work with other colleagues in Publishing Strategy, as well as the Journal teams and Collections Management and Acquisition team to support the strategy for content growth for the Fully Open Access titles.
  • Lead on discrete publishing strategy projects to include both editorially and commercially-driven projects which align with the Nature journals strategy
  • Participate in exploratory/validatory research to inform product/service development and improvement

Strategy execution:

  • Contribute to the strategy execution by providing stakeholder and project support to the Nature journals (hybrid and open access) and the Nature Research publishing program.
  • Work with internal stakeholders to use data analysis to inform business priorities and to turn insights into actionable plans, such as working with Submissions and Author services on transfer analysis and recommendations.
  • To provide project management and support the Head of Publishing Strategy with strategy related activities, e.g. supporting consortia projects and discussions.

Engagement and stakeholder management:

  • Act as a trusted interface between editorial and other key teams (e.g. Editorial, Production, Marketing, Publishing Performance and Intelligence, Analytics Centre of Excellence, MRPA).
  • Attend and present project recommendations at monthly meetings to provide updates.
  • Work with Analytics Center of Excellence to develop dashboards, data which align to strategic project.

Publishing support:

  • Lead / assist with publishing policy development, i.e. free access
  • Provide general publishing support to Nature and the RJ editorial teams
  • Keep abreast of market developments

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • PhD in the sciences preferred or equivalent experience in Publishing
  • Considerable experience in STM publishing or science communication
  • Strong data analytical skills
  • Strong project management skills
  • Excellent communication skills: the ability to deliver a clear presentation and to be able to influence stakeholders during project meetings.
  • Thorough understanding of the scientific process as it pertains to STM publishing
  • Thorough understanding of the needs of authors, referees and internal and external editors
  • Enthusiasm and passion for excellence in science
  • Commercially aware

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $82,114 - $90,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
