Who are we looking for?

Due to continuing growth, we are seeking a Project Controls Specialist for our Ontario Region located in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Ontario, Canada. This individual is a fully qualified professional with thorough knowledge in planning, scheduling, cost controlling and estimating within a consulting engineering environment.

The successful candidate will work within Ontario’s Regional Project Management Office (PMO), providing Project Controls support to all GHD’s Business Groups (BG’s). The type of support will be dependent upon the project needs and will be provided both in person and through remote means.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

  1. Management of the project controls staff assigned to the projects.
  2. Responsible to implement all project control aspects of the project or portfolio of projects including Scheduling, Cost Control, Change Management, and Risk Management in accordance with GHD policies and procedures and good industry practices.
  3. Take a hands-on approach to all or portions of the project controls functions depending on project complexity and staff assigned.
  4. Works closely with the PM on all major project functions, with a primary focus on managing and providing support on the project controls functions.
  5. Actively engages with engineering discipline leads to support updating of design deliverable progress and schedule updates.
  6. Analyze data and develop recommendations on the economic, financial, and other implications of the project.
  7. Reviews with the PM, Design Manager and Discipline Leads the budget and schedule on a regular basis, identifying gaps and providing solutions to achieving the scope, budget and schedule requirements.
  8. Make recommendations on change notices in compliance with best practice change management techniques.
  9. Work effectively with the finance department, especially the project administrators, to ensure project budgets and invoices are accurate and coordinates with the PM to ensure invoices are issued to the client.
  10. If required, coordinates the preparation of capital cost estimates by verifying the list of quantity estimates prepared by each discipline and forwarding it to the person responsible for estimating.
  11. Implement coaching or mentoring on best practice project controls processes within the project team or with other project controls staff as required.
  12. Provide guidance to junior technical staff when assigned to a common task.
  13. Check work of assigned staff for accuracy and conformance with quality and quantity standards.

What you will bring to the team:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent diploma from a recognized college or university with a minimum of ten years broad and extensive technical, administrative and project experience; minimum of 10 years working within project controls within an engineering design environment.
  2. Experience in providing project controls/services for design delivery for large, multi-discipline projects; from design inception through to construction completion.
  3. Demonstrated experience working and/or managing the project controls functions with hands on experience on the following:
  • Detailed knowledge of scheduling methods, cost control processes, risk management procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing project metrics including but not limited to earned value, CPI, SPI.
  • Detailed understanding of project controls as it applies to a design environment (especially in DB projects).
  • Detailed understanding of the implementation and coordination of project control systems not limited to P6, @risk (or similar) etc.
  • High level of proficiency and experience with cost analysis (e.g., MS Excel) and planning scheduling (e.g., MS Project or Primavera P3/P6) tools.
  • The ability to deal with uncertainty, changing and multiple priorities.
  • Team building, staff management and mentoring skills.
  • PMP, PMI or similar qualifications is considered an asset.
