This posting is in anticipation of current and future part-time teaching opportunities starting as early as April 2024. Reporting to the Associate Dean – Human and Justice Studies, with a flexible schedule and in-person classes, the part-time Professor will facilitate the delivery of courses within the above program, incorporating a variety of teaching, learning and assessment strategies, which are designed to successfully meet the needs of learners. Teaches assigned course(s) using best practices and adult education principles.Builds on and develops syllabus and course material, based on existing course outline and teaching materials which becomes part of the course teaching material used by future faculty.Ensures course teaching materials are current, relevant, and reflect the best practices within the relevant professional/program disciplines.Creates an effective environment for learning which accommodates students’ diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences, and individual learning styles.Develops and implement course learning outcomes and alternative delivery strategies, ensuring that support and reflect program goals.Assures that students are aware of all relevant learning outcomes, learning strategies, deadlines, and assessment techniques.Assesses student achievement of learning outcomes and supports student progress through individual tutoring, academic counselling, and timely feedback.Develops multi-media materials and alternative delivery strategies and incorporate appropriate educational technologies into the learning process.Liaises effectively with internal and external partners to create and maintain a collaborative and relevant learning environment.Uses the learning management system to support learner outcomesThe College in collaboration with the Office of the Fire Marshall (OFM) must ensure that faculty in this program meet the provincial standard as outlined by the Ministry to teach in the Pre-service Fire program.In order to join the faculty team, a candidate must be a member of a fire department or recently retired from a fire department (generally within the past three years) and Must have the following National Fire Protection Association certification standards:NFPA 1001 – Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications: Fire Fighter 1 and 2 Certification NFPA 1041 – Standard for Fire and Emergency Services Instructor Professional Qualifications - Instructor 2 Certification NFPA 1072 – Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional QualificationsNFPA 1006 – Standard for Technical Rescue Personnel Professional Qualifications - Technical Rescue - Chapter 5 Core Operations would be considered an assetNFPA 1021 - Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications - Fire Officer 1NFPA 1002 - Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Pump Operator Professional QualificationsEmergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certification and previous teaching experience with EMR programs.A relevant combination of education and experience normally acquired through a degree in emergency services with 5 years of recent, relevant and progressive industry experience in the fire service and previous teaching or instructing experience in the fire service industry or post-secondary sector.A demonstrated ability to create a safe and inclusive space that meets the learning needs of a diverse student populationA demonstrated ability to develop and deliver innovative and engaging learning activitiesA demonstrated understanding of the principles of adult learning along with experience teaching adult learners and developing curriculum; previous teaching experience particularly in the college environment is an assetA demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative environment as evidenced through a strong network of contacts with other professionals, agencies, and employersExceptional communication and organizational skillsA proven commitment to achieving and developing excellence in othersA commitment to lifelong learning in the fieldA proven ability to work within a collaborative environment, demonstrating flexibilityAdvanced computer literacy and a demonstrated willingness to acquire and use learning tools (such as Loyalist’s “Canvas” System) commensurate with departmental requirementsDemonstrated effective interpersonal and problem-solving, conflict and stress management skillsExcellent grounding in best practice and emerging knowledge, skills and attitudes in the fieldAn ability to apply an understanding of diversity and inclusiveness to meet the needs of a diverse student population
