We are looking for a well-experienced and professional Principal Surveyor to join the ABL Maritime team in Montreal, Canada. It is a challenging job with opportunities to grow your career.

What you will be doing.

As our Principal Surveyor, you will conduct marine surveying tasks and lead major casualty responses and projects. Assist in the delivery of business and ensure surveyor coverage in the geographic area of responsibility and also assist the RMD Maritime in progressing initiatives and general management tasks in North America. In addition you will:

  • Lead surveys of vessels in casualty and pre risk situations.
  • Provide day to day management and development of direct reports.
  • To be familiar with all aspects of ABL Maritime services and key deliverables.
  • To attend casualties and determine nature, extent, and cause of damage.
  • Estimate costs of repairs and subsequently compile reports for Clients.
  • Carry out loss prevention and marine warranty surveys
  • Business development activities including the promotion of Maritime Consulting with local and international clients.
  • Assist in marketing of ABL Maritime and its services.
  • Assist the Regional Managing Director, Maritime in leading training and development of staff.
  • Prepare tenders and proposals about maritime business
  • Plan execution of projects including scope, deliverables and schedule manpower resources. Oversee progress and deliverables for projects
  • Implement and continuously improve work processes to deliver excellence
  • Support the Regional Management team in growing the business
  • Ensure all operations, deliverables and quality of reports are by approved instructions, and ABL procedures and policies
  • Maintain and develop new and existing clients through appropriate propositions and relevant liaison to optimize quality of service, business growth and client satisfaction – raising commercial awareness locally
  • Abide by specific internally established control systems and authorities, to lead by personal example and encourage all employees to conduct their activities under the applicable laws and the Company’s standards and policies including its QHSE policies.
  • Responsible for delivery of quality documents within a timeline established by management and client.
  • Other duties as assigned.
The role is based in Montreal, Canada and the incumbent must have the right to work and reside in Canada.
Flexibility to working hours, willingness to travel and work within a variety of time zones – offshore travel is a requirement of the job.
Physically fit and able to climb ladders/work in confined spaces
English speaking/writing to high level, French language fluency

What we are looking for.

We are looking for driven and solution-oriented professionals with sound technical skills and good decision-making capabilities. The successful candidates will have good communication and interpersonal skills, strong leadership ability, and be able to deal effectively with multiple issues and assignments simultaneously. In addition, you will:
  • Master Mariner (STCW class 1), Chief Engineer (STCW class 1) or equivalent with significant survey / Maritime consultancy-related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Have at least 15 years of relevant experience within the Maritime industry with at least 5 years of practical maritime experience (shipyard, ship management or sailing).
  • Must be fluent in English and also French speaking.
  • Good decision-making capability with sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment and strong operational focus.
  • Well organized and self-directed individual with strong business/commercial skills.
Desirable:
  • Extensive shipyard / ship survey experience.
  • Fully conversant with marine and engineering consultancy to the maritime markets.
  • Previous management experience from similar role.
  • Broad exposure to maritime consultancy incl. warranty consultancy, inspections, audits, surveys, damage surveys and project management is a significant advantage.
