Job Description

Mott MacDonald has an immediate need for a Principal Structural Engineer to work on iconic major infrastructure projects in Canada and assist in directing tunneling staff in their performance of planning, design and construction of major underground infrastructure projects.

As a principal engineer, roles and responsibilities are expected to include:

  • Leading structural engineering design delivery of major underground infrastructure projects including management and supervision of structural engineering teams.
  • Managing complex SOE and underground structures project scopes, including management and coordination of multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Implementing quality control and assurance of engineering designs.
  • Being a structural engineer of record for all stages of projects.
  • Mentoring and training staff within the structural engineering team.
  • Working directly with clients, contractors and other partners, taking responsibility for delivering work on time, on budget, and to the quality standards of the firm.
  • Being a role model for advancing our health and safety culture.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines and offices across the global Mott MacDonald group
  • Assist in business development and marketing projects.
  • Assist with proposals and prepare estimates of work-hours and fees.

Candidate specifications:
You will have experience in infrastructure, transportation or water market segments and possess the following skills and experience:

  • A minimum of 15 years’ design experience primarily focused on underground structures (underground stations, caverns, shafts, tunnels).
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in structural engineering or earthquake engineering is preferred.
  • P. Eng license, or immediate eligibility for licensing as an engineer in Ontario is required.
  • Experience being a structural engineer of record for all stages of tunnel projects including concept, detailed design and construction administration.
  • Experience in working directly with clients, contractors, transportation authorities and other design disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability in design and analysis of structural systems including steelwork and reinforced concrete to Canadian design codes.
  • Understanding of the Geotechnical design and analysis aspects of underground structures and experience working on projects where soil-structure interaction models are used.
  • Engineering Interpretation skills with the results from Complex 3D Structural Models.
  • Proficiency in drawing review and development and critiquing structural details for constructability.
  • Excellent ability in use of structural design and analysis software such as SAP2000.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver projects and structural design packages on-time and budget to the satisfaction of clients.
  • Ability in assuring the quality of deliverables for yourself and the team.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate to internal and external stakeholders in a professional manner, both written and verbally.
  • Positive ‘can-do’ attitude, to working with colleagues and clients.
  • Ability to travel within Canada and internationally as required to support projects is preferred.
  • Experience in mentoring and managing structural team members.
