Travel Industry Executive: Building a Bigger Sustainable Travel Industry in Canada’s NorthAbout Travel Nunavut:Established in 1996 to build and strengthen the tourism sector in Nunavut, Travel Nunavut is an organization with an ambitious goal. It serves as the territorial private-sector business services and advocate organization for the travel and tourism sector in Canada’s most unique place to travel and visit. The destination management function largely focused on leisure and vacation travel is led by the Government of Nunavut.Our vision is to grow the travel sector to be a $1 billion industry with 5,000 jobs by 2030. Travel Nunavut represents the interests of over 155 members and other stakeholders and partners who make up the travel industry in Nunavut. Our work involves activities to help establish and build the business success of our members, and advocacy activities to gain broader support and awareness of the travel industry and its importance to the lives, work and play of Nunavummiut.We advocate, promote, and support our members. Our members are as diverse as the landscape of Nunavut. It includes traditional leisure focused members, cruise companies, airlines as well as food suppliers, taxi companies, conference planners and more! https://travelnunavut.caPosition: President, Travel Nunavut based in the City of Iqaluit, Nunavut Purpose:As President of Travel Nunavut, you will lead the travel industry association in achieving its vision of a $1 billion industry supporting 5,000 jobs by 2030. Working with industry stakeholders and other industries such as mining, hunting & fishing, parks & natural resources, and the arts in Nunavut, Canada and around the world, you will have overall responsibility for implementing Travel Nunavut’s Strategic Plan and advocacy agenda and building up the resources needed to support the mandate and activities of the industry organization. Travel Nunavut works closely with the Government of Nunavut in their role as the destination management organization (DMO) for Nunavut.Duties and Responsibilities:As President, you will be the overall leader of the staff team and contractors. You will work closely with the Executive Director who is responsible for the day-to-day activities of Travel Nunavut. You will manage the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization with focus on its key performance metrics. Securing funding and working with funding agencies will be important to building the organization to more than double in size under your leadership.In securing funding, as you build up the organization and its funding, you will expand the organization’s regional reach and ability to serve members and industry partners in the territory’s 25 communities and lands, waters and skies that make up the spectacular territory of Nunavut. You will share responsibility with Executive Director in attending key community & industry events. The President reports to the Board of Directors. You will work with the Board to build and support an active Board of Directors that represents the industry sectors and people of Nunavut. You will lead the organization in its organizational responsibilities, including running its annual AGM and Conference.About You:You are someone who likes to take an organization and steer it in the direction of supporting broad, ambitious, and meaningful outcomes. You are a person who has strong leadership skills and believes in growth opportunities for people on our team. You are an implementer and a doer as well as a collaborator who recognizes the unique skills your team members have and leverages them for the best interests of the organization and members. You will oversee the implementation of activities by the staff team and contractors to serve our members and partners and grow and strengthen the travel industry in Nunavut.Exceptional leadership and communication skills are paramount, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with members, leaders in governments, industry and community organizations, and other stakeholders. Fluency in Inuktitut is ideal. You are not afraid of challenges. This organization is going through a period of rapid growth and change, and you will be part of that.You likely have a university degree in business administration, tourism management, international development, or some related field. If you do not have a degree, you have skills that have been learned from experiences. You are a leader and adventuresome.
