Position Overview:

As one of the fastest growing communities in Canada, Kitchener's central transit corridor (ION Light Rail) is changing with new mixed-use development adding employment, new housing and enhancements to the public realm. The successful candidate for the Planner position will bring demonstrated experience working with a variety of stakeholders on development projects as well as a wide range of development applications with an emphasis on site plans, zoning bylaw amendments, minor subdivision modifications and condominium applications, Committee of Adjustment, Part Lot Control and demolition control, and sign and fence variances. This role may also support planning studies, projects and major policy reviews. As a Planner, you will provide professional planning advice to Kitchener's City Council and leadership team and support planning projects that involve multi-disciplinary teams.

Responsibilities:
  • Process a wide variety of non-complex development applications, such as site plans, zoning bylaw amendments, minor subdivision modifications and condominium applications, Committee of Adjustment, Part Lot Control and demolition control, and sign and fence variances.
  • Coordination of condominium and subdivision registrations.
  • Responsible for making presentations to Council and at neighbourhood information meetings related to development applications.
  • Provide research and information to senior planners on complex planning projects.
  • Assist the general inquiries from the public, developers, staff and Council relating to a complete range of development applications and planning matters.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 4-year degree in Planning or a related field.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years' experience in planning or a related field and a working knowledge of the Planning Act.
  • Full membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners and be a Registered Professional Planner or be qualified and in the process of attaining membership.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the provincial planning framework along with implementation documents such as the City and Regional Official Plans, Zoning By-laws and the Urban Design Manual.
  • Demonstrated excellence in applied computer skills with emphasis in Microsoft Office, AMANDA, On-Point, Bluebeam and adaptable skills for programs such as AutoCAD and Adobe PhotoShop.
  • Able to read and interpret a wide variety of design drawings and legal agreements/documents.
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Possess strong organization and time management skills.
  • Able to support and project values compatible with the organization.
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
HOURS OF WORK:

Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

9:00a.m. - 5:00p.m.

MODIFIED HOURS 8:30a.m. - 5:00p.m.
