The Opportunity:

McElhanney, one of BC's Top Employers for the second consecutive year, has an exciting opportunity for an individual to join our Planning team in Kelowna, BC. Supporting vibrant, livable communities is a key focus of McElhanney across Western Canada, and our Planning teams are active in laying the groundwork for complex, inter-disciplinary projects that shape the way we live. For this reason, we are looking for a Planner to help grow our Planning practice in the Okanagan region of British Columbia and as support for the company throughout BC. The position will be based out of McElhanney’s Kelowna office, however remote working from our Penticton or Vernon office a few days a week can be accommodated. The successful individual will be a part of a team focusing on a diverse range of public sector policy work and private sector development projects . The ideal candidate will be familiar with local Okanagan communities or have a passion to learn.

Salary Range : $65,000-$108,000 per annum . McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The salary range being offered reflects McElhanney’s desire to consider planners with varying levels of experience and the salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Supporting McElhanney’s planning practice in the Okanagan valley and coordinating with McElhanney planning teams in other branches to ensure great project delivery to amaze our clients;
  • Working with local governments on public sector projects that could include Official Community Plan and zoning bylaw updates or amendments, housing studies, land use studies, and parks and trails projects.
  • Working with developers and property owners to obtain approvals for development projects.
  • Business development with new, existing, and key clients;
  • Liaising and developing strategic partnerships with clients, project stakeholders, various levels of government and sub-consultants;
  • Professional project management and execution of planning projects;

What You’ll Bring:

  • Community planning experience is required, preferably with a background in both public sector planning and private consulting;
    • Junior to Intermediate candidates: up to 8 years of experience in community planning
    • Senior candidates: 9+ years of experience in community planning
  • Master’s Degree or accredited undergraduate degree in urban planning, urban design, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience in land development approval and municipal development processes;
  • Experience with local government land use regulatory and procedural policy and bylaw development;
  • Knowledge of public engagement processes, with an understanding of IAP2 practices and principles.
  • Ability to prepare information and host Public Engagement opportunities;
  • Proven excellence in creative problem solving and solution implementation;
  • An understanding of provincial planning legislation, and a willingness to learn surrounding local government policies and bylaw requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Proficient in technical and policy writing;
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to function in a high volume, challenging environment;
  • CAD experience or ability to use other design software would be an asset.
  • Eligibility for membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners;
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
