Raise public awareness and developing information tools for the general public and stakeholders in the medical community
Encourage and support leading edge research in Manitoba and Canada

Description of Duties:

These positions are open to anyone in Manitoba as we meet using Zoom. This is a contributing board position to support Scleroderma patients. The new board members will attend scheduled board meetings (in person or via virtual conference); participate as an active member on at least one board committee (finance, education, or communication).

Skills Required:

Mature individual with excellent communication skills both in person and in writing; previous experience in participating on a volunteer board; previous participation in fundraising events; basic awareness of scleroderma. We meet using Zoom and our files are shared virtually using Dropbox. Computer skills are an important asset.

Skills Gained/Related Careers:

Those unfamiliar with using Zoom or Dropbox can be guided through the steps necessary to be successful. We do not have a physical office and so anyone in Manitoba is invited to apply. These opportunities will assist volunteers to experience opportunities to develop:

1. Leadership such as chairing a meeting, resolving conflict within team members; building consensus relating to action plans; recruiting others to help complete projects,

2. Problem Solving such as finding creative ways to distribute important information across social media platforms, print materials, and advertising

3. Organizational Structure and Function such as learning the importance of policy and procedure, formal registering and reporting requirements relating to organizations; learning the connections between meetings and strategic plans; and

4. Advocacy such as participating in meeting with government officials to lobby for improvements to medication coverage through Pharma-care programs or services to those with disabilities.

Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+

Time Commitment: Daytime , Evening , Remote Volunteering

Board meetings are scheduled as frequently as 6 times per year and last about 1.5 hours. Preparation for the meeting requires about 20 minutes to read the agenda and minutes. Preparing a committee report could require up to another 2 hours. Committee meetings between board meetings vary depending on the time of year and upcoming events. This varies but could be up to 3 to 4 hours per month. The term of office is three years. These are volunteer positions. Our organization has no paid staff.
