CUPE Standard - Range 23 - Start - $39.08 - Hourly CUPE Standard - Range 23 - Job - $42.25 - HourlyDepartment: COMMUNICATIONS, ENGAGEMENT & MARKETING GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This is a unionized position responsible for strategic marketing of City of Medicine Hat business functions including economic development, business retention and investment attraction, parks and recreation, and events, entertainment, culture, and heritage. This position is responsible for creating and implementing marketing plans and strategies, publicity, media and public relations, and advertising in support of the city brand. This position also assists with public events, website strategy and management, and social media oversight in support of the business plan objectives of Communications, Marketing and Engagement and departmental business partners. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Reports directly to the Manager, Marketing and Creative Services. Works cooperatively with other team members to maximize consistency and coordination of services / resources. Works closely with designated City of Medicine Hat business partners to support their business plan objectives. Develops positive working relationships with internal and external groups, including media agencies, community groups, and other partners. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS/ACCOUNTABILITIES: Research, develop and implement marketing strategies for respective area of responsibility (economic development, business retention and investment attraction; OR parks and recreation; OR events, entertainment, culture, and heritage), reviewing and updating annually or as required based on departmental objectives. Oversee the development and implementation of social media strategies. Develop strategic content for collateral material development (advertisements, news releases, brochures, profiles, fact sheets, backgrounders, newsletters, video, blogs, etc.). Proactively recommend opportunities to raise awareness of activities, programs, and services within the community and beyond. Perform copywriting, editing, and proofing of marketing materials using plain and inclusive language. Assess marketing issues / requirements and provide advice / recommendations for resolution. Prepare and analyse statistical data to evaluate marketing efforts and support future planning. Stay updated on industry trends and technology opportunities and adjust strategy as necessary. Provide leadership and direction in the planning and execution of various events. Conduct advertising buys and oversee advertising budget. Participate in the ongoing content management of web assets ensuring information is strategic, accurate and current. Other related duties as assigned. REQUIRED COMPETENCIES: Knowledge of the assigned respective area and a basic understanding and knowledge of the municipality, its services, and programs. Demonstrated understanding of marketing and public relations practices and principles; an ability to assess situations, determine strategies to meet marketing objectives and provide professional advice, recommendations and solutions based on those principles. Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills. The ability to adapt writing style to target audiences. Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to organize, clarify and communicate complex or ambiguous ideas effectively through engaging, easy-to-understand messages. Ability to facilitate groups to achieve understanding and solicit ideas and feedback. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with honesty, sensitivity, and diplomacy, maintain confidentiality and deal tactfully. Ability to take initiative and be flexible in demanding conditions to meet deadlines and prioritize and manage several competing, complex, evolving projects. Ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders within the organization and with external partners. Awareness and sensitivity to issues involving the organization with the ability to exercise sound judgement. Knowledge and understanding Albertas Occupational Health, Safety, Environment and other relative Federal and Provincial and Municipal legislation. Advanced knowledge and ability to utilize standard business software as a tool for communication, analysis and documentation. Experience in layout and design, both for print and on-line. Adept at working independently and as part of a team that is committed to a positive work environment. Ability to work flexible hours as required. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Successful completion of a four (4) year degree in marketing, communications, or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution. Five years (5) previous experience in marketing, public relations, or communications. Possess and maintain a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license. A management approved equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
