The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) is the largest labour organization in Canada, bringing together national and international unions, provincial, and territorial federations of labour and community-based labour councils to represent more than 3 million workers across the country.

Due to an upcoming vacancy, the CLC is seeking a Managing Director of Finance and Operations based at the CLC Headquarters office in Ottawa, Ontario. This position requires a dynamic and visionary professional with extensive experience and proven ability in all facets of progressive financial and administrative management.

Under the direction of the President and the Secretary-Treasurer and as part of the CLC Senior Management team, the Managing Director of Finance and Operations is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the CLC’s financial systems, and will be involved in a range of strategic planning and internal initiatives.

Summary of Duties

  • assist the Secretary-Treasurer in the development and implementation of the CLC’s financial and administrative policies.
  • work in close cooperation with the senior management team, elected leadership, and key staff at all levels of the CLC to develop strategies, implement policy decisions, coordinate services, administer resources, and develop and monitor programs.
  • provide leadership and direction in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the general accounting functions and preparation of financial statements.
  • oversee the preparation and control of budgets; operational leases; planning and management of financial information systems.
  • provide financial oversight of the logistical arrangements of meetings and functions of the organization.
  • develop long-term financial plans consistent with the CLC’s priorities and budget realities.
  • act as a skilled resource person on several committees (e.g. finance, pension).
  • direct management responsibility for several staff, making recommendations to leadership on all matters related to hirings, promotions, and other staff-related matters within the departments assigned.
  • exercise judgment and discretion in resolving complex problems to ensure the objectives of the CLC are achieved.
  • maintain a proactive and cooperative work environment to ensure effective and timely responses to the changing needs and priorities of the organization.
  • foster an inclusive and collaborative team culture that values diversity and inclusion.
  • perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • proven leadership abilities, strategic skills, and the ability to analyze and articulate complex issues.
  • demonstrated ability to lead and manage diverse staff and functions.
  • sound judgment, responsiveness, resourcefulness, and flexibility within a highly challenging political environment.
  • a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in good standing, combined with at least 10 years of experience, preferably within a unionized environment or non‑profit sector.
  • extensive practical experience in the development and implementation of budgetary, financial, and administrative procedures and systems.
  • superior interpersonal, problem-solving skills, oral and written communications skills
  • ability to work effectively in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • general knowledge and understanding of current issues affecting the labour movement would be considered a strong asset.
  • previous experience with labour relations considered an asset.
  • ability to travel domestically on occasion.
  • fluency in both official languages (EN/FR) is highly desirable.

This position has a very competitive annual salary of $162,412.20 and includes a generous vacation entitlement, as well as excellent health, vision, and dental benefits, group life insurance, LTD coverage, defined benefit pension plan, and free parking.
