ERM is seeking an experienced and motivated Managing Consultant - Social Performance to join our Canada team. The successful candidate will be a key member of the team on a range of social performance projects in BC, Canada and internationally. Projects activities may include but are not limited to baseline data collection, socio-economic impact assessments, management plans/programs, Indigenous and stakeholder engagement, and due diligence assessments, related to the technology, mining, and energy sectors. The successful candidate will support projects in compliance with both national Canadian legislation and international best practice standards, working closely with team members, and contributing to winning proposals. This is a full-time, permanent position. The position is based in Western Canada (Vancouver or Calgary office), with options for remote/hybrid working. French, Spanish languages are an asset.

This role may involve short periods of travel as required based on project needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical expertise related to socioeconomic impact assessment, stakeholder engagement, due diligence, risk assessment and mitigation, and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Work directly with ERM teams and clients to complete social research, impact assessments and management plans associated with permitting and environmental assessments. Expected project delivery activities include research, report writing, undertaking and organizing data collection and survey fieldwork (such as key informant interviews), data and literature review, and development of recommendations for clients. Incorporate gender based analysis (GBA+) where relevant or required by regulators. Activities will be guided by ERM’s technical tools, approaches, and templates; or may require unique or innovative approaches.
  • Provide technical expertise regrading the incorporation of Indigenous Knowledge into impact assessments, following best practices and the preferences and cultural protocols identified by Indigenous groups, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Support Indigenous and stakeholder engagement that build meaningful relationships with communities, Nations, businesses and individuals, while adhering to ERM’s Reconciliation Strategy. This work requires collaboration within ERM, with clients and affected communities. There will be a need for agility to successfully advance projects. This work may include development of engagement strategies/plans, managing engagement databases, preparing and delivering presentations. This work may also include preparing and reviewing communication materials, such as notices, display boards and factsheets, as well as materials such as website/social media content and surveys.
  • Contribute to, and senior review, the preparation of social-economic or engagement-related deliverables.
  • Support and lead project management for social performance activities including health & safety protocol management, monitoring of commercial performance, quality review of deliverables, management of schedule and budget. Project management responsibilities will align with ERM’s PM@ERM guidelines, appropriate to the consultant’s level and experience.
  • Understand and apply relevant regulatory requirements and other guidance, including provincial and federal permits and regulations, international standards (e.g., IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles), industry guidance (e.g., ICMM) and others.
  • Collaborate with other ERM practitioners (in Canada, US, and globally) to execute projects. Participate on, and be accountable to, project teams that may be composed of multi-disciplinary professionals from multiple offices around the global ERM organization.
  • Provide mentorship to team members to support the delivery of work.
  • Contribute to or lead proposal development, including development of technical scopes and cost estimates in accordance with ERM’s policies and processes.
  • Support client relationships to maintain new and repeat business. Work with other global ERM resources to deepen relationships with ERM key clients to expand ERM’s profile and market share through a combination of excellence in technical delivery and business development support.

QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRED SKILLS:

  • Masters degree in international development, economics, social science, law, geography, public health, public policy, political science, resource management, anthropology or a similar degree.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience, including Indigenous and stakeholder engagement, impact assessment, environmental and social due diligence, and/or other activities in Canada and/or internationally. Experience in a consulting role is an asset.
  • Experience working with a variety of project stakeholders including local, regional and Indigenous governments, local communities and residents, NGOs, etc.
  • Solid grasp of the key social performance issues, management challenges and opportunities related to resource development, especially mining and energy sectors, and a high degree of technical competence and broad knowledge of social performance and impact assessment best practices.
  • Experience with permitting and regulatory processes. Regulatory experience in BC is an asset.
  • Versatile, responsive, self-driven, accountable, and results-oriented.
  • Strong critical thinking skills. Ability to provide high level strategic analysis, advice, and recommendations on opportunities and challenges.
  • Experience developing and delivering presentations, trainings, and facilitation.
  • Well-developed teamwork skills and demonstrated experience working with a diverse team.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and react in a changing project environment.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established health and safety protocols.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including exceptional technical writing skills.
  • Fluency in English. Fluency in another language (particularly French or Spanish) is an asset.
  • Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

For the Managing Consultant, Social Performance position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $84,000 – $92,000 CAD . An employee’s pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs. We also may have instances where compensation may be outside of the range, based on the factors noted above. This job is also eligible for an annual discretionary based performance bonus.
