Position Purpose:

Under the direction of the Assistant Dean JD Program, the Manager, Recruitment and Admissions provides strategic direction and recommendations, management, and leadership in the short, medium and long term in the development and implementation of services, policies and processes associated with recruitment and admissions at the Faculty of Law, Common Law Section, which have a direct impact on the strategic plan of both the Common Law Section and University. This includes direct supervision of the Common Law Section recruitment and admissions staff, and management of all admissions and recruitment activities.

Admissions and recruitment in the Common Law Section is unique compared to other Faculties in the University. The Common Law admissions process involves a holistic review of applicant files that is resource and time intensive. This holistic process is critical to achieving the Common Law Section’s strategic goals and necessary to ensure that the Common Law Section is admitting applicants who are academically excellent, as well as ready to participate in a learning environment that is collaborative, diverse, and inclusive.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Develops and implements strategies and best practices to attract top candidates to Common Law Section programs that is aligned with industry standards in Canadian legal education. Efficiently and effectively manages the communications, marketing and implementation of programs to recruit, evaluate and admit students into Common Law Section programs while ensuring rigorous quality control mechanisms are in place to guarantee consistency, equity, diversity, inclusion and efficiency throughout the admission process.

  • Provides advice to senior management about new trends in the national and international market, clientele, and competitors, to proactively respond to internal and external competition. May be required to benchmark to recommend best practices adopted by competitors in the legal education market.

  • Exercises strategic leadership to ensure the Section and University’s objectives are met in admitting a diverse and excellent student body into Common Law Section programs in a context where applicants will be admitted primarily through a holistic admission process, and the quality of applicants will influence the Common Law Section’s reputation and standing in the legal profession and legal education market.

  • Monitors statistical data related to the admissions process (including, for example, applicant data, offer data, and acceptance data), and analyzes, identifies, and evaluates factors affecting the admission process to ensure alignment with the Section’s recruitment and admissions priorities. Makes recommendations to achieve recruitment and admission objectives set by the Assistant Dean and in the faculty’s strategic plan.

What you will bring:

  • A university degree is required, with a strong preference for a candidate with a JD or master’s degree.

  • Minimum five years’ experience in post-secondary education administration with a strong preference for a candidate with experience in a post-secondary professional school, particularly in professional school admissions; or a minimum of five years’ experience in the practice of law.

  • Experience managing staff, with progressively increasing responsibilities in a complex, decentralized organization involving multiple stakeholders.

  • Experience leading large-scale projects with systemic scope, involving various aspects (e.g., technological component, human resources component, implementation of a new regulation and/or institutional policy, etc.).

  • Proven ability to manage several functions simultaneously under pressure of resources and deadlines.

  • Strong leadership, communication (oral and written), public speaking, relationship management, analytical, research and project management skills are required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent tact, diplomacy and confidentiality is required in working with students, employers, alumni, staff and senior level law school and University officials.

  • Willing to exercise flexibility in work hours to accommodate emergency and crisis situations, weekend and evening events, and travel during recruitment fairs.

  • Experience in implementing effective change management strategies to support the achievement of institutional and faculty objectives.

  • Experience in developing, interpreting, explaining, and applying policies.

  • Knowledge and experience with information technologies, especially computerized management systems and their strategic application.

  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of reconciliation and decolonization, and equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Bilingual
