Job Description

Vestacon is an industry leading Construction Management firm with Offices in Toronto & Vancouver specializing in ICI Office construction. As the Manager Occupational Health & Safety, reporting to the COO, the successful candidate will provide leadership, guidance and expertise for Vestacon’s health and safety program with support from the Site Safety Compliance Manager, and our safety partner. This role is also responsible for maintaining our credentials and programs.
Principal Responsibilities and Duties
· Leads the continuous improvement of our programs and new approaches to ensure compliance with legislation, company health and safety policies and best practices.
· Promotes a culture of safety in all activities – office and site.
· Develops, implements, maintains, and continually improves corporate policies, programs, training procedures, and related documents including manuals, plans and guidelines.
· Monitors employees and vendors for compliance to safety procedures, regulatory requirements, and health & safety documentation submission with assistance from project teams.
· Prepares documentation for submission to regulatory bodies, as directed.
· Maintains an inventory of compliance documents.
· Prepares / updates monthly, quarterly and annual reports, as directed.
· Analyzes health & safety documentation for trends, non-conformity with the safety system or opportunities for improved safety.
· Management rep on the office Joint Health & Safety Committee (bi-monthly). Tracks implementation of recommendations and report any deficiencies.
· Completes monthly workplace inspections.
· Participates in the project Joint Health & Safety Committee Meetings. Tracks implementation of recommendations and reports any deficiencies.
· Plans, coordinates and participates in health and safety training, as directed.
· Prepares safety talk materials where required by Site Supervisors (special circumstances, work requiring MOP etc.).
· Performs workplace inspections (in house and on construction sites), such as layered audits.
· Assists in Near Miss & Incident Reporting when required.
· Assists with drafting and distribution of employee communications and ensures all project sites have current documentation and required material.
· Tracks and maintains health & safety equipment and material inventory; places orders as directed – PCs & Driver advise when stock runs low.
· Creates Site Specific Plans & Emergency Plans at the start of every new project:
  • Project Site Safety Plan
  • Project Emergency Poster / Hospital Map
· Creates monthly Safety Blitz emails to inform employees based on needs & current trends.
· Chairs & Minutes Quarterly Site Supervisor Health & Safety Meetings.
· Reviewing our safety partners' site reports and ensuring items flagged are actioned in a timely manner and distributing to project teams for action.
· Verifying Methods of Procedures prior to higher level hazard site activities.
· Regular visits to projects sites to review site safety and H & S documentation.
Working Conditions
· Regular travel to project sites.
· Available to be on call as part of emergency response.
· High sensitivity to timelines with moderate overtime required from time to time.
Qualifications
· Post secondary degree - Occupational Health & Safety (preferred)
· CRSP or working towards (preferred)
· In-depth knowledge of the OHS Act, WHMIS and a thorough knowledge of occupational safety, theory, principles and best practices related to construction activities.
