Job Description

Reporting to the Sr. Director, Facilities, the Facilities Manager requires strong operations expertise and planning to ensure safe, functional, clean and efficient facilities. As a Christian organization, it is essential to lead in a manner that reflects our faith and values, guiding others in a culture of Christ-centeredness, productivity, stewardship, and continual improvement. This position is responsible for managing custodial and maintenance staff, day-to-day building operations, providing a safe environment for the public, staff and residents and must collaborate with other departments, such as shelters, food services, finance, human resources, IT, etc. to ensure that facilities support the overall goals of the organization.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, direct, and oversee all aspects of facility management for Calgary operations, ensuring optimal functioning of physical assets.
  • Lead by example by actively engaging in hands-on maintenance and cleaning activities, supporting the team and ensuring operational excellence through personal involvement.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance value, profitability, and operational efficiencies.
  • Manage the facilities maintenance budget, controlling expenses and ensuring cost-effectiveness.
  • Design and implement asset maintenance and preventative maintenance plans to mitigate equipment failures.
  • Resolve maintenance challenges and emergency situations, conducting root cause analysis for long-term solutions.
  • Oversee Business Continuity Plans and ensure team members are trained for effective execution.
  • Lead and guide the maintenance team, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Develop positive relationships with contractors, customers, and community stakeholders.
  • Negotiate contracts and services with integrity, ensuring optimal service and pricing.
  • Liaise with customers and tenants to understand and address maintenance needs promptly.
  • Provide leadership in environmental activities and regulatory compliance.
  • Formulate and execute strategic development initiatives to optimize facility operations.
  • Ensure team compliance with security, safety, health, environment, and quality requirements.
  • Uphold company values and culture, creating a supportive atmosphere for the team.
  • Manage employee training, development, and performance evaluation programs.
  • Create clear goals and assess performance against those goals, providing feedback and coaching as needed.
  • Develop succession plans for key roles and responsibilities.
  • Utilize feedback to create action plans for improvement.
  • Manage financial transactions and budgets, ensuring compliance and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Monitor financial performance and report on variances and areas for improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience in building maintenance preferred
  • Experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire alarms and other building systems, equipment and maintenance practices
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations and codes related to building and facility operations (Provincial building codes and regulations, Canadian electrical codes, Provincial fire codes and Electrical Safety Authority).
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to effectively manage teams and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders
  • Experience developing and implementing facilities management strategies and initiatives
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and address issues and risks proactively
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously while meeting deadlines
  • Maintains a sense of urgency and prioritizes tasks effectively
  • Adaptable and flexible in the face of changing circumstances and evolving priorities
  • Demonstrates a high level of responsibility, reliability, and trustworthiness
  • Familiarity in relevant software applications, such as CMMS, CAD, and project management
  • Highly organized and self-directed with a knowledge of WHMIS and OH & S standards
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license required
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is typically performed both indoors and outdoors and requires both mental and physical activity, such as sitting, standing, walking, or climbing stairs, to inspect facilities or supervise maintenance activities.
  • May require long hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate maintenance needs and emergencies.
  • May involve exposure to hazardous materials or situations and visits to construction projects, requiring the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Requires travel to various company sites.
  • May involve occasional stress due to managing multiple priorities and deadlines or dealing with emergencies
