Job Description

The position is available in Regina or Saskatoon. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Legal Counsel & Practice Advisor is responsible for providing practical expertise in both legal counsel and professional practice within the Saskatchewan REALTORS® Association (SRA). This role provides internal legal advice concerning services to the real estate sector in Saskatchewan, contract review and drafting, review of internal policies and procedures, while also ensuring the delivery of valuable and timely services to REALTORS®. Organization The Association provides leadership and services that support over 1,700 REALTORS® in Saskatchewan through technology, education, and advocacy. The Association is also the expert voice invested in bringing insight to public policy makers on matters that affect growth, housing, real estate, and the creation of wealth in our communities. Primary Responsibilities Practice Advisor Serve as a knowledgeable resource and advisor to REALTORS®, offering guidance on professional conduct and ethical standards. Assist members in navigating legal complexities, ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practices. Conduct educational sessions and workshops to enhance REALTORS® understanding of legal and professional obligations, fostering a culture of professionalism and excellence within the industry. Legal Counsel Act as the primary in-house legal counsel, providing guidance on legal matters, and expert advice to the Association. Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and legal agreements, ensuring compliance and protecting the Association’s interests. Review and update internal policies and procedures to align with legal standards and industry best practices. Manage risk and organizational compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Provide leadership and support in the professional standards and discipline process as needed. Keep the Association informed of critical issues, priorities, emerging risks, offering solutions to mitigate legal exposures. Facilitate the protection of copyrights and trademarks critical to the Association’s operations. Collaborate across departments including Professional Practice, Communications, Technology, and Public Affairs to provide practical on-the-job expertise to enhance service delivery and strategic objectives. Cultivate strategic partnerships to advance organizational goals. Keep updated on changes to real estate laws, regulations, market practices, and review change requests that may impact the content or use of REALTORS® forms. Privacy Act as Privacy Officer, overseeing the development and implementation of privacy policies and procedures. Manage privacy incidents and inquiries, ensuring prompt response and resolution in accordance with legal requirements. Provide guidance on privacy matters for new projects and third-party agreements, integrating privacy considerations into organizational objectives. Leadership Promote knowledge sharing and a culture of continuous learning among team members, fostering professional development and collaboration Collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team to develop business strategies and initiatives aimed at mitigating the Association’s overall risk. Cultivate strong relationships with stakeholders including regulators and industry professionals. Education & Experience Law degree (Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent). Five (5) years of recent related experience as a practicing lawyer or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Demonstrated expertise in drafting legal documents, contract drafting, and compliance program development within an organizational context. In-depth knowledge of real property law, including familiarity with The Real Estate Act and the REALTOR® Code. Competencies Strong leadership abilities, capable of guiding and motivating teams to achieve objectives. Effective communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts clearly and effectively. Proven analytical skills and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills enabling successful working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including Boards of Directors. Capacity to thrive in sectoral or member associations' consultative, collaborative, and political dynamics. Adaptable and resilient, capable of thriving in a fast-paced and changing professional environment. Skilled in providing constructive and actionable performance feedback to team members, fostering their growth and development.
