As the Legal Counsel, Litigation and Investigations, you will contribute to the management of litigation, arbitration, mediation, and other dispute matters affecting the company, its affiliates and subsidiaries. In such capacity, you will primarily be responsible for the efficient management and resolution of a range of litigation and disputes which includes, but is not limited to intellectual property, contractual, employment, workmans’ compensaton, class actions, and government investigations by directing and managing outside counsel. You will ensure that the company maintains compliance, mitigates risks, and stays within legal budget.

You will be reporting to the Director, Litigation and Investigations.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the management of corporate litigation, mediation, arbitration, and other dispute resolution files (intellectual property, class actions, commercial/contractual, employment, workmans’ compensation and government inquires and investigations, among others) affecting the company and its affiliates and subsidiaries.
  • Act as resource person for the Director, Litigation and Investigations.
  • Establish litigation and dispute strategies.
  • Liaise between business units at the company and external counsel with guidance and instructions.
  • Assist with managing and responding to document production and e-discovery requests.
  • Manage external legal counsel including through negotiating budgets, fee proposals, and retainers and reviewing and assessing received invoices related to litigation matters.
  • Assist in the preparation of quarterly litigation matter summaries, reserves, and audit and board reporting for all litigation matter including IP Litigation.
  • Provide feedback and guidance on draft pleadings.
  • Provide feedback and guidance on proposed settlement and resolution opportunities, where appropriate.
  • Keep apprised of developments in legislation and case law and assist in the identification and assessment of such developments on designated lines of business.
  • Conduct research on legal issues and prepare opinions and present such opinions to the designated business units.
  • Develop and sustain good working relationships with business partners by facilitating open communication and becoming familiar with the designated business units.
  • Maintain and manage the Company’s record retention and information management policies and processes.
  • Respond to subpoenas and government access to information requests.
  • Provide employment, and labor law advice as needed.
  • Assist with internal compliance investigations.

  • Fluency in both English and French due to interactions with external parties and other provinces.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.

Qualifications

Education

Required

Bachelor or better in Droit - Law.

Experience

Required

4 years:

4 years:

Minimum of 4 to 6 years of solid and progressive litigation experience at a leading law firm and/or in-house at a leading company in a highlighy regulated industry setting.

Preferred

• Substantial experience in commercial and product liability in the pharmaceutical industry and/or in managing large portfolios of cases and claims is an asset. Experience in intellectual property litigation is an asset.
