As part of our Shared Services group, comprised of Finance, Marketing, Communications, Human Resources, Commercial, Legal and Facilities, we support the business achieve their goals through a range of strong technical capabilities. We ensure delivery of services through the skills of our people, methodologies, and systems.

An exciting position has become available for an experienced lawyer to join our Corporate, Commercial and Legal Services Group based in Mississauga, Ontario. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer and Global Director of Contracts and Corporate Legal Services, you will work with a variety of internal stakeholders as well as other members of Hatch's legal and commercial teams.

As counsel, you will be a trusted advisor to our business for some of the largest and most significant infrastructure, energy & metals projects in North America spanning a range of key markets including mining, rail and mass transit, environmental services and energy (both traditional oil & gas and green energy projects). You will work side-by-side with driven professionals who are both industry leaders and passionate about being a part of a company that is dedicated to delivering a better world through positive change.

In this role, you will:

  • Apply experience and good judgement to deliver sound legal advice to various internal and external stakeholders in relation to Hatch's delivery of capital projects, participation in joint ventures and negotiation of services agreements with clients, partners and vendors
  • Review and prepare commercial agreements and other relevant legal and commercial documents to create maximum value and minimize risk in a manner consistent with Hatch's internal governance and strategic business plan
  • Assist with the development and implementation of global and/or regional commercial strategies
  • Manage internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective resolution of claims or disputes
  • Develop and improve Hatch's contractual and commercial practices
  • Manage (alone or in consultation with internal stakeholders and external advisors) mergers and acquisitions, general commercial transactions, technology licensing arrangements and employment matters In conjunction with other members of the Corporate, Commercial and Legal Services Group, develop and deliver training and/or publications on commercial and legal topics of interest and ensure that Hatch's precedents are updated to reflect key developments in the law
  • Strengthening client relationships, client engagement and networking using collegial and consultative approach.

What you bring:

  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent degree from an accredited Canadian law school.
  • Admitted barrister and solicitor in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Minimum of five (5) years relevant experience with a major law firm and/or the in-house legal department of a major corporation
  • Ability to confidently interact with Hatch's clients and senior management
  • Detail oriented with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptional problem solver with a strong background in advanced commercial negotiations
  • Ability to remain calm and measured under pressure
  • Positive attitude and motivated, self-starter
  • Ability to function well as a business leader in a team environment
  • Strong client focus and ability to deliver sound legal advice in a manner that enhances Hatch's existing business relationships
  • Able to prioritize, manage and execute a variety of time-sensitive tasks.
  • Collaborate on exciting projects to develop innovative solutions
