Job Overview:We are seeking a Legal Counsel and Labour Relations Advisor to join the Police Association of Ontario. This role is crucial for developing, advocating, and implementing policy positions on legislative changes, regulation drafting, and ministry policy. The ideal candidate will be a qualified lawyer with a strong background in labour relations and government affairs.Responsibilities:Legal Advocacy and Government Relations:Serve as the primary legal expert for PAO's government relations portfolio. Lead advocacy efforts with government stakeholders, providing legal insights and support to the President in strategic government relations to benefit our members. Policy and Legal Framework Development:Research, develop, and legally vet policies focusing on legislative changes, labour relations, and police welfare. Ensure that all policy initiatives are legally sound, considering the input and concerns of our members while fostering an environment that supports their professional needs. Stakeholder Engagement and Legal Negotiations:Actively engage with police oversight bodies and third-party stakeholders to advocate for legally-informed policies that benefit PAO members. Utilize legal expertise to build and maintain consensus among various stakeholders, always prioritizing the needs and well-being of our members. Legal Education and Communication:Prepare and deliver clear, impactful legal analyses and presentations. Lead the planning and delivery of educational content at PAO meetings and events, focusing on current legal trends and best practices in police labour relations and policy advocacy. Legal Representation:Represent the PAO at third-party conferences and events, enhancing the organization's influence while focusing on advancing our members' interests through a legal lens.Skills and Qualifications:Law Degree (LL.B or J.D.) required. Membership in good standing with a provincial bar association. Minimum of 5 years of experience in legal practice, preferably with a focus on labour relations or policy development within a government or non-profit advocacy setting. Experience or familiarity with the policing sector considered an asset, providing valuable insights into its unique legal and operational challenges. Deep understanding of legislative processes and experience in effective legal advocacy. Strong negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to build relationships and effectively communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders.
