Job Description

Duties:

The Lab Technician serves as a crucial link between students, instructors, and the curriculum development process. Lab Technicians actively contribute to the teaching team, providing valuable insights to ensure the program meets the diverse needs of the student body. They also participate as students, receiving and providing feedback to enhance the learning experience.

Each Lab Technician represents a discipline and will serve as a student mentor in the program. In this way, they wear a student hat and they wear a teaching team hat, which is transparent for students and instructors, and provides a communication and consultation bridge between the two roles.

Role:
1. TEAM MEMBER: As a dedicated member of the teaching team, the Lab Technician actively participates in monthly meetings, contributing to the ongoing evolution of the curriculum. Lab Technicians assist in assessing assignments based on their respective areas of specialization, providing insightful feedback to foster students' academic growth.

2. LAB TECHNICIAN: The Lab Technician plays a crucial role in understanding the strengths and areas of improvement within the curriculum design and delivery process. By observing and evaluating the course from the perspective of both a student and a team member, Lab Technicians gain valuable insights into the overall effectiveness of the educational program.

3. STUDENT: As students themselves, each Lab Technician receives assignment feedback from course instructors before providing peer feedback on their colleagues' assignments. This approach ensures that they adhere to the same standards and requirements expected of the students, while also benefiting from instructor feedback to align their assessment expectations.

Responsibilities:
1. TEAM MEMBER: Lab Technicians actively contribute to the peer feedback model implemented in the course, which places students in the forefront of evaluation. By skillfully bridging their roles as both students and teachers, Lab Technicians empower students to become proficient in providing peer feedback. Recognizing the importance of peer evaluation in an emerging field with many uncertainties, the course aims to foster a culture of safety and quality through collaborative learning.

2. LAB TECHNICIAN: Drawing from their unique perspective as both students and team members, Lab Technicians provide valuable feedback on the challenges and successes of the course design. Their insights offer a comprehensive view of the program's effectiveness, enabling continuous improvement and refinement.

3. STUDENT: Lab Technicians actively participate as peer colleagues, creating a supportive learning environment where expertise is exchanged within a relatively flat hierarchy. By engaging with their fellow students as equals, Lab Technicians exemplify the culture of collaborative learning and mutual growth within the program.

Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
