We are looking to add a Lab Mechanical Engineer Co-op to our Data team in Vancouver, BC. Reporting to the Vice President of Geoscience, the student is responsible for independently designing mechanical and electrical devices to improve lab processes, implementing safety controls and documentation, and test in-development technologies with tools including forklift certification. Most importantly, the ideal candidate will be both enthusiastic and ready to get hands-on in a mineral processing environment.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Designing mechanical and electrical devices to aid lab processes.
  • Conduct measurements in the lab on run-of-mine materials to support the development of our ShovelSense and BeltSense systems, using a range of analytical methods, including XRF, RGB imaging, and Hyperspectral infrared spectroscopy.
  • Select and prepare samples for independent verification by commercial labs.
  • Compile relevant data and pre-process results to a format that can be used for full analysis.
  • In conjunction with colleagues, complete full analysis of test results, assess sensor performances and make recommendations for sensor and processing algorithm design.
  • Applying mechanics of materials knowledge for safe design.
  • Writing safety documentation for new processes and equipment.
  • Driving a forklift to move and pour samples—you will be professionally certified.
Qualifications:
  • Geoscience or Engineering student with a passion for hard rock mining.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment where there are often multiple ongoing projects.
  • Focus on health and safety; being able to safely conduct lab tests on run-of-mine material with the appropriate safeguards, semi-independently.
  • Strong independent work ethic.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • 3D CAD (Solidworks) and FDM slicer (3D printing) knowledge.
  • Basic understanding of fabrication processes.
  • Adept at hands-on mechanical design and fabrication, basic mechanical skills.
  • Previous experience working with, and handling of rocks is advantageous.
  • Legally able to work in Canada.
  • Physical fitness to walk, carry and step over objects; lift 30kg.

$3,000 - $3,400 a month

The salary offered to the successful candidate will be based on their experience, knowledge and skills they bring to MineSense, market data based on their location as well as internal equity. Keeping this mind, the salary offered can be outside of the range posted. We are in growth mode and are looking for talented folks at all levels, so please do not hesitate to apply.
