Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) is seeking a Junior In-House Legal Counsel (Legal Counsel – Level I) in either of its Nunavut offices (Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet or Cambridge Bay).

NTI Legal Counsel works closely with the NTI Board of Directors, senior staff, and external counsel/consultants in the provision of legal services to the organization. Responsibilities include preparing/attending meetings of NTI Members and Board of Directors (may include travel), conducting legal research and providing legal advice in several areas of the law including Nunavut Agreement interpretation and implementation, Indigenous/constitutional, administrative, corporate, employment, wildlife and natural resources law, contracts, reviewing legislation and regulations and preparing submissions on proposed legislation, appearing before Institutions of Public Government/government agencies, and overseeing litigation.

The ideal candidate should have 1 to 3 years of relevant legal experience (minimum of one-year post-call legal experience) is a member in good standing with the Law Society of Nunavut or is currently eligible for membership (i.e., must have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized law school, must have successfully completed articling requirements and bar examinations/CPLED, etc.)

Excellent drafting, analytical, and communication skills required. Good verbal and written Inuktut communication skills are a strong asset and willingness to learn is required. Knowledge of Nunavut, the Nunavut Agreement, NTI’s corporate governance structure, Inuit/Indigenous legal/policy issues are strong assets.

The ability to work with demanding deadlines, strong problem-solving abilities, and ability to work in a politically sensitive environment and under high levels of stress/pressure are required.

Preference will be given to Inuit enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement.

Salary commensurate with experience. NTI offers a comprehensive benefit package including Northern and Housing allowance of $35,232.00, an employee pension plan, group insurance and vacation travel assistance.

A writing sample (5-10 pages) will be required for all candidates who are selected for an interview.
