IMMEDIATE INTERIM OPPORTUNITY

Interim VP, Security & Safety

Reports to: EVP

Duration: 6 Months

Location: Toronto, ON

Mainly virtual

Travel and accommodation provided


Our client is a large Canadian company, they are looking for a seasoned executive who has excelled in their career in large, complex environments in the field of security and safety. In this assignment you will be focused on assessing the current skill sets, policies, processes, and technologies providing key insights as our client looks to elevate the impact and value of these critical functions in the face of an ever-evolving threat environment. The EVP is looking for a disruptor who can objectively assess and help to build a progressive strategy that will drive change, reduce risk, and improve the employee and guest experience. In this engagement you will not only provide the strategy but also be responsible for leading and engaging the teams through the initial phases of change and help to create the right structure and direction for the functions.


The position is responsible for delivering and promoting a safe and secure environment for employees and guests and to ensure the protection of company assets and reputation.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Assess current structures, policies, procedures, and technologies providing key insights to the EVP.
  • Work with the EVP to produce a modernization strategy to present to the CEO and the Board.
  • Begin the journey of transformation initiating the projects of modernization and empowering the team to set the platform for sustainable change.
  • An exceptional relationship manager with the ability to develop and nurture trust-based relationships at all levels of an organization and across key stakeholders including external law enforcement and emergency responders.
  • At ease with strategic planning and policy development, including building consensus across a complex stakeholder environment.
  • Ability to anticipate, influence and respond, allowing the organization to rapidly adjust to changing circumstances which might impact security, safety, or crisis management.
  • Effective at communicating recommended courses of action, appropriate to the brand, in response to complex problems.
  • An innovative mindset, constantly looking for new approaches, technology, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to influence, regulatory frameworks applicable to safety and security.
  • Comfort level with principles of cybersecurity for both IT and OT and how they intersect with physical security; understanding of biometrics, AI and associated legal issues.
  • A relentless passion for excellence and the ability to instill that in others through inspirational leadership.
  • Ability to drive the modernization of Crisis Management Plan templates, procedures, and playbooks.
  • Conduct a threat analysis.
  • Consultative support for locations and corporate teams responding to emergency and crisis events.
  • Security and safety organizational design.
  • Recommendations to improve enterprise health, safety, and security management systems.
  • Key Performance Indicator (KPI) tracking and analysis.


Competencies and Requirements:

  • Minimum 10-15 years of relevant industry experience in increasingly significant leadership roles.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and/or Physical Security Professional (PSP) certifications or similar are a plus.
  • Proven experience and exposure in international security, including managing issues and crises.
  • Ability to demonstrate, either through qualifications or experience, an understanding of anti-terrorism and law enforcement operations in the commercial context.
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements (e.g., OHSA, NEBOSH, IOSH, etc.) and experience in managing safety programs.
  • Experience implementing contemporary security technology systems to support security and crisis management, including vendor selection through the Request for Proposal process.
