Job Description

Working with the Town of Newmarket’s Recreation and Culture Team, means the opportunity to make a difference and connect with your community! Working in Recreation means being apart of something special, gaining valuable work experience and learning new skills. We are looking for dedicated individuals who enjoy working with persons with disabilities and who have a passion to deliver high quality programs, events and services. One thing is for certain, you will love the experience and our participants will too!

The Successful Candidate will:

Guide adults with disabilities through safe, well-planned and specialized activities in a group setting. 

Researches and implements specialized programming for BASE (Adult Day Program) to promote participant engagement and skill development. 

Lead adapted activities in a small group setting and organize required equipment/supplies. 

Adapt activities and make modifications to program plans as needed.

Manage behavioural challenges to ensure safety of participants with disabilities, other participants and staff. Occasionally may involve physical contact with participants (i.e. guidance). 

Provide personal care of adults with disabilities, as required, including toileting, changing and feeding. 

Respond to emergency situations including performing minor first aid and/or arranging for medical assistance.

Communicate with parents/guardians on a frequent basis and collaborate with other program staff to resolve issues or concerns. Consult with supervisors for strategies, as needed. 

Meet with other program staff and supervisors to discuss program plans, ideas, areas of concern, and participant information (i.e. behaviours, interests, triggers, strategies, etc.).

Job Requirements

Graduate in post-secondary studies in recreation, social work, education, Personal Support Worker, recreation therapy or equivalent.

Certifications in behaviour management, mental health and addictions, or related fields.

Three or more years of experience working with children, youth and/or adults in recreational delivery settings including persons with special needs.

Proven background in the delivery of Inclusion/Special Needs programs and services. Experience in adaptive programming and implementation of accommodations.

Ability to participate and assist participants in a variety of recreational activities, which may include adapted activities, swimming, skating, and other sports including the ability to assist with lifts & transfers. 

Excellent customer service, communication, leadership, organizational skills, and sensitivity to interact with a diverse group of patrons, parents, and staff in a courteous and efficient manner. 

Due to the nature of the contacts of this position a Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the Town is required.

Current Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification required.

Current High Five (Principles of Healthy Child Development) certification required.

Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification or equivalent is required.
