The ideal candidate will provide expert legal advice and services to support the operations and strategic objectives of CPA PLI. This role involves working closely with various departments to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, managing claims, and advising CPAs on risk management practices.


Responsibilities

  • Handle a diverse portfolio of non-litigated claims against CPAs, employing a proactive approach to claims handling.
  • Assist insureds directly, maintaining open and trusting working relationships to gather pertinent information.
  • Work closely with internal claims handler to support the claims resolution process and will serve the interests of CPA PLI as well as insured members.
  • Investigate, evaluate, and negotiate non-litigated claims with claimants and/or claimant’s counsel.
  • Direct external experts to assess, repair, or resolve non-litigated claims effectively.
  • Manage the work and performance of experts to achieve successful resolution of claims.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate evaluation of claims to identify and manage reserves in compliance with CPA PLI’s standards.
  • Advise on risk management strategies and help develop policies and procedures to mitigate legal risks.
  • Stay current with changes in laws and regulations affecting the company and ensure compliance.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of risk education programs on topics relevant to CPAs

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law (and/or) Juris Doctor (JD)
  • Be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Minimum of three years of legal experience, preferably with a focus on insurance law, professional liability, or related fields
  • Strong understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to the insurance industry preferred
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills,
  • Bilingual in French is an asset
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • High ethical standards and professional integrity
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
