Purpose of Role: Under the direction of the Vice President, Motion Metrics; the Head of Research and Development, is responsible for leading Motion Metrics technology vision and strategy, ensuring alignment with Motion Metrics business objectives. This includes leading multiple teams of engineers that focus on innovation, collaboration and customer focus to deliver long-term solutions. The ideal candidate is self-driven, has a sense of urgency, strong leadership and mentoring skills, and business acumen.

The Head of Research and Development, Motion Metrics is responsible for collaborating with sales, products, and operations to develop the technology strategy solutions to meet current and future needs; stay informed about emerging technologies relevant to the industry. This role serves as the primary champion for the Motion Metric’s technology strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Technology Leadership: Partner closely with executive leadership to develop and execute a comprehensive technology strategy aligning with the long-term vision of being the leading digital mining productivity partner. Drive the creation of a five-year product and technology roadmap, integrating customer needs, competitive analysis, and market trends to achieve business objectives and deliver compelling value propositions.

Effective Execution Management: Oversee the execution of the product and technology roadmap, ensuring timely and budget-conscious delivery while maintaining a focus on technological health and sustainability. Direct resource planning efforts and conduct regular portfolio analysis to adjust strategies as needed to meet year-end goals.

Collaborative Innovation and Partnership: Drive innovation both internally and externally by fostering partnerships with global thought leaders. Own the new product development process, enhancing it over time through collaboration with regional sales leaders, product management, and other teams to deliver solutions aligned with customer needs.

Technology Assessment and Integration: Evaluate third-party technologies and advise on competitive positioning, partnership opportunities, and potential acquisitions. Lead intellectual property (IP) management and compliance efforts to safeguard Motion Metrics products.

Market Understanding and Business Development: Deeply understand market dynamics, competition, and revenue opportunities. Develop comprehensive business cases and plans for new opportunities, prioritizing initiatives based on corporate goals and objectives. Ensure alignment and coordination across key internal stakeholders to drive successful execution of initiatives.

Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical or related). MBA strongly preferred.

Proficiency in Hardware and Machine Vision Technologies: Demonstrated experience working with hardware components, specifically sensors and cameras, in the context of machine vision systems. Strong understanding of image and video processing techniques, as well as data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) applications in this domain.

Expertise in Transforming Products to Customer Value: Proven ability to translate technical products and solutions into tangible value propositions for customers. Skilled in identifying customer needs and preferences, and adept at aligning product features and capabilities to meet those requirements effectively.

Directly supervises multiple teams of engineers. Strong leadership and building effective teams is required. Self-motivated with the ability to collaborate with and influence peers.

Candidates must possess a blend of creativity and pragmatism, ensuring innovative ideas are not only imaginative but also feasible within a business context. The ability to operationalize creative concepts, avoiding purely theoretical or impractical solutions, is essential.

Compensation: $191,591 - 260,000 CAD
Weir Motion Metrics/Weir ESCO is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. Actual compensation packages are determined by several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to job-related skills, depth of experience, certifications, relevant education or training, and specific work location. Packages may vary by location due to differences in cost of living. The recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for a preferred location during the hiring process.
