Job Description

The Royal Canadian Geographic Society’s Graphic Designer works directly with the creative team under the Creative Director, to create cohesive designs to meet the company's goals. The Graphic Designer will create visual materials, magazine layouts, web, and other media. Founded in 1930, and published by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, Canadian Geographic is an iconic Canadian publication that has been making Canada better known to Canadians and to the world for more than 90 years. Beyond its key role as publisher of Canadian Geographic, the Society also supports a robust national educational program of classroom educators – Canadian Geographic Education – as well as promotes broad geographic literacy through its expeditions, research grants, awards and other programs. Duties and responsibilities Create and develop visually appealing materials Create and develop graphics, illustrations and advertisements as required Editorial Design/Layout for all the magazine issues, including Special Interest Publications and books Present designs to the creative director for approval and feedback Review final design files for quality assurance Design and produce print, digital and collateral pieces such as the magazine, ads, branding, brochures, newsletter and digital banners etc. Help research supporting graphic content, illustrations and photos Meet magazine workflow and deadlines Work with editorial and design team to produce magazine and special interest publications lineup/flatplans Help with production of and tracking down materials for in-book contra and house ads, etc. Other design/production duties as required Organization and file backups Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art Design, Marketing or related disciplin Extensive experience with Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, specifically with mockups, web design and multimedia presentation 3 years in professional commercial design, preferably with a marketing or creative agency Adaptive design eye and skill Excellent communication skills Ability to absorb and apply constructive criticism from peers and clients Highly proficient knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (CC) - Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat on MAC Platform Strong layout skills and technical expertise in editorial design and long document projects Knowledge of typography Image colour correction experience Strong communication and organizational skills Able to take direction and willing to take constructive feedback Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment Print pre-production experience Working conditions Flexible working hours. Be able to work under tight and variable deadlines.
